One of my favorite aircraft, that generation's A-10. I had talked with a navel aviator who flew one, he said when he got out of flight school he was wanting fighter jets and was disappointed to get assigned to the A-1. But he fell in love with it.

YES! One of my all-time favorites also. SANDY!

A lot of people claim that if they had the money they'd buy a P-51, and nothing wrong with that. Me, if I was a pilot and had the money, I'd have an A-1.

The pilot I referenced said that in Vietnam, he always returned aboard the carrier with bullet damage, and once he flew back with half a wing, half a horizontal stab, most of the skin between that wing and tail gone, and missing one landing gear, but it flew great.

Great documentary. The North Vietnamese Crop Duster lol.

I did not know it was the same engine that was on the B-29.

They were also called Spads My 1st squadron was VA 176 which had transitioned from A-1 skyraders to A-6 intruders from VA176 history "09-Oct-66: VA-176 off the INTREPID--LT William Patton flying another A-1H got a MiG-17 in N. Vietnam (20mm Cannon). Four Frescos (mig 17s) jumped four SPADs and probably wished they had stayed in bed that day. The final score for the SPADs was one kill, one probable, and one possible with no losses to themselves.

Dad was at Hurlburt field after Vietnam, 66 - 68. Beginnings of usaf spec ops; rescue choppers and cas trained out of there. Early Spectres were at Duke Field.

Saw lots of Jolly Green Giants and Skyraiders buzzing around.

Hurlburt still very much focused on AFSOF.
