I've been making my own fire starters by taking bits of a duraflame log and wrapping them in newspaper. They work well enough and by using a walnut sized piece of the duraflame I'm not introducing any more creosote than the little $5 fire starters they sell in the store (or so I'm theorizing anyway, those things look like a duraflame log bit with a fancy paper wrapper which is where I got the idea).
Anyway, I left the log out where I was working on the patio and this morning I noticed the log had moved out onto the lawn. Last night some critter decided to drag it around and gnaw the end of it for a while. I suspect there is a dead critter somewhere now, that can't be good for you.
