I was cutting some metal this morning when this happened

Luckily I was done cutting anyway. But I can easily imagine a scenario where I wasn't done and I thought "I can get through this one cut, I don't need to switch wheels."

This is a horribly dangerous road to start down. If you don't want to stop and change out cutting wheels, you'll really hate stopping to go to the ER and have chunks dug out of your face.

Glad you didn’t get hurt. I was cutting a piece of aluminum sheet metal a couple years ago and had one explode.

Yep. Every time I see someone use one for grinding instead of cutting because they don't want to swap discs I cringe. I watched one come apart and a chunk went through the garage door...

It's why you always have two grinders on hand or more. Grinding disc on one. Cut disc on the other.

The biggest thing I've witnessed is being right over the work and inline with the disc. Staying off to the side has saved me on a couple of occasions when one broke.

I avoid putting my face right down in my work, it doesn't really improve the quality any and it increases the risk to my face. I need to stay pretty, it's my only asset.

Were you using it in a side grinder or a die grinder? I prefer a die grinder for cutting discs, depending on the application.

I'll just bring it to your house and use your tools. I have a harbor freight angle grinder that gets used for everything.

What guard? The one that gets in the way so you end up putting your face right next to what you're doing because you can't see?
I've got four 4" grinders, one with a flap disc, one with a hard disc, one with a flat sanding disc, and one with a wire brush.
Four guards are still in the boxes. Can't see or do diddly with the guards on.

A good friend of mine had a dead wheel fly apart on him. A piece of it cut thru his pants into his thigh about half an inch away from his weewee. It got him pretty bad.

Had a neighbor using a grinder with a wire brush attachment. The brush snagged his sock and proceeded to eat it and his ankle. Not pretty.
