Active shooter UNC Chapel Hill

My daughter is a postdoctoral fellow at the med school.

She says that apparently the shooting was in the chemistry building, the shooter is a chem grad student, and at least one person was hit.

This info coming from a police scanner. Don't know how accurate it is.

She's a biochemist, but fortunately, she's at the med school. The shooter is not in her building, thankfully, but they are locked down.

Also, the shooter hasn't been caught. The guy whose face is all over social media is the wrong guy.

Lots of drama at UNC. I have a friend on the inside and he texted saying there is a metric crap ton of bad information floating around.

Seems to be centered around 1 or 2 buildings near the bell tower, shots earlier, trying to confirm if any injuries.
Just got another text from the daughter. Your friend is right. There are a handful of conflicting story lines out there, so no telling what is actually going on.

Rarely - if ever- believe first reports in a crisis. Social media just makes this problem even worse.

Sooner or later someone is going to post or re-post misinformation that gets people killed by telling them to run in the wrong direction or staying in the wrong place. Or post the wrong face and get someone innocent shot.

How could this happen? Chapel Hill is anti gun and guns are not allowed on campus!
Technically, you are allowed to have them locked in your vehicle if you have a CCW. I'm sure UNC hates that, but that's what the law allows.

Gov. Roy Cooper released a statement Monday afternoon appearing to confirm that the situation involved shots fired.
“My office is in communication with law enforcement and officials at UNC-Chapel Hill who are taking precautions to protect campus safety following today’s shooting,” Cooper said in a 2:49 p.m. post on X, formerly known as Twitter. “This is a tragic way to start a new semester and the state will provide any assistance necessary to support the UNC community.”

This is not sound like the typical mow them all down mass shooter, it sounds like a guy with a target. Lock down on all public schools right now is stupid. Why not just lock down the city? Let's do it in Durham, too.

I saw that this guy's name is Som Ting Wong.
I see what you did there.

Can you imaging DPS locking down every school every time there was a shooting in Durham?

My sister just got off of lockdown. I told her that I would be pissed if they wouldn't release my kids to me. She said what if a gunmen got in while they were releasing a kid or those people were taken hostage? I told her that is a terrible kine of reason, and that schools have a terrible tra k record of keeping kids safe if someone wants in.

Can't we just wait wait for all the facts before BS gets spewed?

You should probably call the media outlets and express your concern. They'll probably agree that it's a fantastic idea and wonder why they didn't think of it themselves.

what kind of firearm did this adjacent white wuhan perp use?

Noel T. Brewer, a professor of health behavior, said he was once held at gunpoint in his mother’s jewelry store, but that Monday’s apparent shooting and lockdown was “far more stressful.”
One of Brewer’s colleagues is visiting from Africa and staying in the U.S. for the first time.
“She said her one concern was guns and possibly something happening at the university,” Brewer said. “And this was her first faculty meeting, and her worst nightmare came true.”

Edit: from a news report, inaccurate not first day of class.
North Carolina university shooting suspect Tailei Qi is seen in handcuffs staring at the ground after the Wuhan-educated
physics PhD student sparked manhunt over campus shooting on FIRST DAY back to college.
Reported that he shot a professor.

I’ll bet his husband is glad the lockdown is over. 😉

Brewer, who also has a 2-year-old added: “My husband and I have been trading texts and trying to figure out what to do … Just wondering how our kids are feeling. It’s a lot.”
