I think that is a black racer

Pretty sure it's an eastern king snake. (I'm wrong it's a racer for the op)

I've only ever handled one. Apparently they are awesome. Hunt copperheads for food.

The bosses wife came into the shop one day freaking out about a snake in a birdhouse on her porch. Told her "yeah the baby birds are gone but we'll remove the snake😎"

Yep, king snake. Took apart birdhouse and removed snake with 3 lumps in it lol. She wouldn't talk to me for like two months because I wouldn't kill it on the spot and relocated it instead. I can still piss her off my mentioning it🤣

If you saw it going across the road or trail, it’s an Eastern Ratsnake. Good snake. Nonvenomous.

But If it scared you and made you “feel” bad, it’s one of those evil black copperheads, probably with one of those shoulder things that goes up...

Black rat snake, they won't hurt you, but can cause you to hurt yourself.

Doesn't seem to have the "shimmer" that I have seen on racers.

It's a black rat snake. They have a white throat and belly. Black racers are black with a grayish-black throat and belly. I tell everyone that there are only three common venomous snakes in NC. The copperhead, the cottonmouth, and the rattlesnake. Of those, the copperhead is the most common, the cottonmouth is "generally" east of 95, (I imagine thousands of water snakes are killed every year by urbanites who should not be allowed outside to begin with) near bodies of water, and the rattlesnake(s). Learn those three and you will have nothing to fear as all the rest are totally harmless. Yes, we have a few coral snakes and diamondback rattlers but they are so rare that you will make the news if you find one. A few counties along the coast have pygmy rattlers too but to keep it simple just lump then together, so you have the copperhead, the cottonmouth, and the rattler(s).

This is a great site and has pics of all of our native snakes

Had one living in some blocks at my house.

I posted about it here.

I got told it's a black rat snake.

That's a black rat snake.

JP8819, that could be an Indigo Snake... like a racer, but heavier... pure black with an iridescent sheen, very fast and elusive. They cover a personal range of a couple of square miles!

Intresting it Could have been it had a odd color sheen to its skin more flat black looking than most rat or racers I have seen . I didnt get to close to mess with it but it was not moving much so couldnt speak to its speed and didnt seem to be trying to get away. About 3.5-4ft long picture makes it look longer and diameter of a broom handle. Just left it be to keep the bad ones down.

Here's where all the Snake Nancy's show up.... :)
