Sorting through all the deals that have been popping up and comparing prices with rebates, tax, shipping, etc. and getting truly annoyed at all the odd round count boxes that are being peddled these days. I'm beginning to think that its just an effort to prevent easy price comparison by doing the math in my head. What makes me angry is that the trickery sometimes works, when I'm standing there in the store and it takes me a bit to figure out the price per round as I'm trying to get the various quantities on a par price-wise. I never shop the brick and mortar stores without knowing the price per round I'm willing to pay.

I mean boxes of 20, 40, 90,120, 250, 275, 320, 325, 420 ,525, 600, 650, 750, 900, 1200, 1400,1625- who decides these oddly chosen quantities ? It's not like I'm buying milsurp based on what "fits in the can" based on a hundred years of GSA purchasing contract tradition.

Actually.....I agree with the OP. It's particularly irritating when they switch round count without changing the packaging.

so, you see what you think is a 1,000 round box and only get the 820 or whatever. Boo!

My only irritation is that most .223 and 5.56 come in 20 round boxes. Its like getting 8 Hotdogs and 12 buns...the math irritates me.
Well if you used standard 20rd magazines...

I remember getting some Malaysian surplus battle packs with 30rd. boxes.

I have a Fudd Fone. Not available in black, Only comes in walnut, with geese ring-tones. I'd use the calculator but cant figure out where to put the paper in.
You can always buy a smart phone and take a dremel to it. I'm sure you can figure out a way to attach an abacus. Might take a little bondo.

This is where it requires higher order math for a resolution. And this is how I explained it to my wife:

Her: Why did you buy all those extra magazines for my rifle? (A bolt action .22LR)

Me: Because this way you can load up an entire box of ammunition for your rifle at one time. Now you can spend more time shooting and less time reloading. You load up all your magazines, then set up to shoot. When one magazine is empty, swap it out for another. When you've gone through all your magazines, it's probably time to swap out targets anyway. Otherwise, each time you empty your magazine, you have to stop, reload, and THEN get back to shooting. And that's annoying.

Her: That actually makes sense!

When I got her an M&P-15 Sport, she asked "Why did you buy me three extra magazines? There are only 20 rounds in a box of ammo."

Me: Because each magazine is a 30 round magazine. If you have one, then you have half a box of ammunition left. If you have two, then you can load up three boxes of ammo with no left overs. But that's only 60 rounds, and one magazine swap. With four, you can load up 6 full boxes of ammunition for 120 rounds of shooting fun and three magazine swapouts.

Her: I like that!

Now there is a 247 round pack. From Hornady.

The round counts have so far at least made some sense, but 247?

Cigar manufacturers started the oddball counts decades ago. When the cost becomes what they perceive to be too much for the consumer, they lower the quantity in order to keep the price tag down. Lots of grocery items have been that way for awhile now too.

Next time you buy the 8 hotdogs and 12 buns, throw in one of those packages containing 4 ears of corn. Nothing beats a corn dog. :)

Now about all the gas prices ending with 9/10 of a cent. Who started it? It can never be stopped now. Obviously filler uppers am slow witted.
