I noticed my Texas Exxon credit union checking account jumped up by $3,119.80 last week. Nice, but my NC state tax refund is routed to PNC in NC. Logged in, saw the money was from a company called ALIGHT LEAVE SOLUTIONS.
I smelled rotten fish.
Today, I receive an ADP pay stub, with my Gross Pay, taxes withheld , etc. At the bottom, is a Non-Negotiable “Paycheck”.
Seems that various internet sites mention this company. ALIGHT has zero BBB info, and all kinds of conflicting info about the company.
While I appreciate the bump up in my account, I cannot have earned income, since I am receiving a Total Disability check each month from SSA, plus LTD from Exxon.
Supposedly, ALIGHT deposits money in a personal checking account, and in so many days the check bounces.
Anybody know what the endgame of such a scam is supposed to be?
Thanks for any info. Scammers are everywhere, and they pick on older farts the most🤬

The old way of doing this was to ask you to return the money, or tell you to keep some for the inconvenience. Then when the check bounced you’re on the hook for the amount.

Not sure what they’re trying here. But I would definitely contact your bank. Explain the situation and see what they suggest.

Returning the money is out. Reversing the deposit may be an option.

Contact your financial institution and let them handle it. When this happened to someone I know, the bank didn't show the deposit on their end but accessing the account through the bank website showed the money was there. Somehow the computer itself was hacked to show bogus information.

Scamers are getting creative.

Got a call from my CU, fraud department. They said there was a charge on my visa from Las Vegas from an iPhone. They wanted to know if it was me.

They verified my address, last 4 of my SN. When they said they were going to send me an email to verify who I am. I was supposed to read back the code to verify. That's when I got suspicious.

I asked what was the last transaction on the visa. They said it was the Las Vegas transaction. I know what it was as I just bought spark plugs from West Marine. So I questioned how do I know who they are and the phone hung up. Called my CU and they confirmed there was access from the website trying to recover and change my password. From an iPhone, we don't do Apple in this house.

I can see how older, 80+, get scammed. They were spot on till the access code. That's when they made the mistake that triggered suspicion.

Presumably they want you to contact them to report the mistake, then they’ll ask you something.
So don’t do that.

I only deal with these on an outbound call. If they call me I think them and say that I’ll call them back, then call the number on the back of my card. So far no scams, but you can’t be too careful.

Yeah they will probably ask you to send it back. If you do you are screwed once their deposit bounces.

Not at saying that this is legit, but Alight is a legitimate HR and benefits outsourcing company, I’ve got friends and former coworkers that work / worked there. Used to be part of Aon Hewitt

I have Alight benefits through work.

Oh wow, really? let me stop you right there though, I don't give answers or confirm anything from cold calls. I'm going to call the number on the back of my card and ask for the fraud dept right now. that's okay, right?

Bank/CC 101 is they never call you and request your personal info. Huge red flag

I'm reminded of a time, during the height of COVID, my wife was working with a local Social Security office, by phone, on a benefits issue. It was a Friday and the details didn't get resolved. Short staffed, yadda, yadda. So, wait for a call back. Saturday afternoon, we were in a restaurant parking lot, (take out only), talking to a friend when MY phone rings. It ID's as Social Security, but a number out of Chicago. I show it to my wife and we both say, BS. Saturday? Chicago? No way!

Monday rolls around and we're back in contact with SS and we mention the attempted scam. There's a pause and a sigh, "It was us. We had staff across the country volunteering to work the weekend, to help with the workload. But, we didn't notify anybody this was happening. So, no one would talk to us, because they didn't believe it was really us."

I think you just described why nobody answers their phone anymore, unless it’s from a known and expected contact. Even appearing from a contact is not enough. A coworker tried calling me the other day and I truly thought it was spam, until talking to her and she said she tried calling me from XYZ number.

One of the popular scams is when someone's number is being spoofed and they're texting you to say they are in trouble and need money sent.

I'm actually kinda amazed at how creative these guys can get. In used to get a voice-mail from a woman who was very casual.

"Hey, George! It's Carol at the bank. I've been trying to reach you. You're loan's been approved. Just to know where you want the check sent."

So have you figured out yet what happened?

CU gal investigated, said they have seen this scam before. The scammers deposit money, wait till you use some of it, then call and make a deal with you to get a certain amount of gift cards for them. They will let you keep the rest. Oopsi, their check then bounces or is clawed back.
CU said that since I notified their fraud team, I cannot be charged any fees for bounced checks, or anything related to this deposit. They have frozen my account until they figure it out.

They have frozen my account until they figure it out.
This is the main reason I use two checking accounts. One receives my DD, pays monthly bills, and does not have a debit card or a checkbook. The other gets an allowance and has a card for spending, but isn't critical to my household finances.

I’ve received a few CC scam calls like this. They say they’re calling to verify fraudulent charges on my Mastercard. The call sounds very convincing until I ask them “which card, what are the last 4 digits?”. They always respond “the first 4 are 5424.” Well duhh, all Mastercard are 5xxx, Citi happens to be 5424. The first 4 digits signify which card issuer and bank, so providing that tells you nothing. When I pressed them from there, they hung up, so now I just hang up once they give me the first 4.
I can definitely see how people get scammed on this one.

Another one. In recent weeks I have received 3 to 5 e-mails thanking me for my order and telling me the bill is attached. I also never open these e-mails, just delete . I have received those before but lately it's picked up.
Just like my cell phone if your not in my contacts I very very rarely will answer.
I do pay attentions to a message. Sometimes they are funny scams.

…and sometimes they don’t even put in the minimal effort. Not necessarily a scam attempt, but I got this text somewhat recently:

I always reply to them giving them a friends contact info and tell them he is my accountant.

He ends all contact by asking what their sister and mom are charging now.

Well, one did call back and cussed him some more.

I get quite a few of those, usually sent to me with my mother's full name in capital letters and saying my credit card will be billed for some ridiculous amount, though it never is. Not sure what the point of the emails is unless it's a vector to try to get malicious software on your machine.

Phishing. They want you to reply to a email like [email protected], or logon with your creds to a similarly generic website like citi-financial-services.co

That's what I thought as well. I went straight to the delete button.

Credit Union reached a dead end on fraud, told me deposit is legit, and check had cleared.
Called NY Life, who runs Exxon’s LTD policies. My rep tells me that Exxon took their LTD policies to Alight Leave Solutions, who underbid NY Life. He said I should have received a letter from Alight Leave Solutions, informing me of the change. He then said, prepare to receive nothing but a Direct Deposit and a paystub, since Alight is a low-cost insurer for a reason.
As long as I get the contracted amount each month, till I hit age 65, I be happy.
So far, so good.
