My daughter is looking for an anvil or an anvil shaped object to begin blacksmithing. Anybody have something they might be willing to part with? small amount of money may change hands if needed.
Not looking for cast chinseiem from Harbor Fright.

I've got an 80's or 90's (I think) 5"+ vise from a not hd maker I will give you if it's useful.

It may fit the bill for a beginning hammer user.

Eddie0225,
Probably 50 pounds to start, maybe. Don't really know.

J R Green,
Not sure when we will be going that way. Might be a couple of weeks. Prolly sooner. If you are that close to I40 I could maybe stop by your place.

Let me talk to her.

well not sure if you know I recently made my own anvil, It wasn't hard just time-consuming. I happened to get a bunch of extra steel just in case I screwed up. Does she weld? not sure on her age sonot sure if you'd let her yet

Question

"My daughter is looking for an anvil or an anvil shaped object to begin blacksmithing."

Wouldn't an anvil shaped object for blacksmithing be an actual anvil by definition?
Yes, but actual anvils are ridiculously expensive now. :)

lol yeah kinda would. I made my anvil before I finished my forge, oh she'll need to get one of those too. I so feel for you

She doesn't weld. She is 30 so I don't try to stop her from learning anything.
lol I thought she was a kid you know young teenager or younger lol. I've got plenty of good steel to make a smaller one. The face metal is expensive the other not so bad but I might could be talked into doing a smaller one.. mine we figured weighs around 270. 1619749561792.png

I've in the last few years with prodding from @LeeMajors have learned to weld in fact making my anvil taught me a ton, but He's constantly prodded me to learn to weld and to build my own forge and anvil which I can say has got me to learn tons on all accounts.... practice makes perfect of at least a lot better... So yes I'm all for helping anyone learn to do anything

Where do you get stock for welding and forging? I mean real stock, not lowes home depot crap. I need to make some barn door hanger slider for a project and need some decent angle iron; what kind of place am I looking for?

For that project I would use Race City Steel in Denver.

Have you tried scrap yards? I picked up a 2" thick slab that's about 5' x 20" for next to nothing last year. Also got a big chunk of 7" x 11" bar 12" long from a guy in east TN. He'd cut whatever length you want.
I think the 12" chunk was $175.

Like Leemajors said Race city steel or I've found best stuff deal-wise at salvage yards Not sure what is close to you, but I'm sure there have to be some steel dealers so to speak close to you. Oh beautiful anvil by the way.

This place is near Greensboro. They sell blemished new anvils when they have them. They are a farrier tool supply company.

Very popular anvils too, especially for beginners.

I'm needing to find something like the blacksmith depot near me guess I'd have to look first lol

The Depot is way cool! Tons of stuff in a warehouse type showroom/shop. Three or four power hammers making tongs while you look around!

Is there a specific aspect of blacksmithing that she wants to do? Knowing that would help determine what she might be able to get by with.

I thought I wanted to do knives mainly, went ahead and built my own 2" belt grinder. But, after some research I think I'd rather do traditional ornamental stuph.
I've yet to strike hot metal, still waiting to build my shop to house all of this stuph.

Mostly knife making. Some other small stuff maybe.

I took bit's and pieces from different plans, and used metal that I had on hand except for the wheels. Lucked into a new motor for $120.

Also built my own coal forge, found a $50 old blower.

Still not cheap, but I've heard good things about the $360 NC Knifemaker Anvil.

I watched a video of a guy making a grape vine (with leaves and grapes) and got blown away...THAT'S the king of stuff I want to do.
