Any insurance (auto home) on the forum?

I'm a Farm Bureau agent, let me know if I can help.
Any requirement to using the agent in your own county? I’m assuming not.

If I’m already a customer, can switching to you save me any $$?

Figured I’d ask those in public before moving to PMs.

Don't have to use an agent in your county. Agents can't manipulate the rates, if I write you the exact same policy that you currently have the rate would be the same.

When this has come up in the past it seems that there's two companies with happy customers, Farm Bureau and Erie.
Happy Erie customer here, almost 10yr now. Happy to share my agent’s info if needed.

Another happy Erie customer.
A deer hit my wife ( her story ) a few weeks ago. Minimal damage. Long story, but the whole thing has been very easy for us. Best interaction I have ever had with a insurance company.

My uncle in Wisconsin totalled his F350 in a similar tale. He says this deer was in the road as he came around a blind corner, biggest darn thing he ever saw around there. Turns out he was talking about a Deere. Huge farm equipment.

Happy Erie customer here too!

I saved a bunch of money moving to Farm Bureau from USAA and a bit more moving to AAA insurance.
Just my experience…

I just left Horrace Mann and went to Erie. But there's a reason that I left HM and it cost me money to go to Erie but, I drive by my new agent's office everyday.

Checking in from Surry County. I'm getting ready to do some shopping as well.

I'll reach out to both Erie and Farm Bureau

Just curious when insurance questions come up.

How many of you shop / deal directly with an insurance company and how many look for an agency to shop for you? Pros and cons of each?

Honest question. Can you buy directly?

I thought all policies were written through agents.

Maybe agent vs broker?
Most are both.

Edit to add: or at least have alternate lines to write a policy through.

@Amp Mangum writes all mine, and we write my motorcycles through different carriers depending on what year it is.

I do not know. But I'm reading posts saying people are going to contact "xxx" company, like they are calling direct and not going through an agent, hence my question.

Hence my agent vs broker comment.

When I think of calling an insurance company, it's calling an agent for that company.

A broker, in my understanding, will search multiple companies and can get a policy wherever.

Generally, the agent is bound to the company. The broker is not.

That's how I understand it.

So it would be a broker that represents more than one insurance company and not an agency.

My Farm Bureau agent can shop more than Farm Bureau.

Some insurance companies work with independent agents who have contracts to represent a number of different insurance companies. Other companies sell only through their own agents who are employees of the insurance company. I prefer to deal with independent agents who can compare coverages and premiums among their various companies to get you the best deal, both in what is covered and how much it costs you. I say this after 40 years of working for three insurance companies that were represented by independent agents.
