I am pondering a simple weekend trip to test out the BOBs practicality, setting up an emergency shelter, camp cooking, a bit if exercise. anyone else care to do this? or have a place to?

Am I a pussy if I want to wait until May? Besides my BOB is really a GHB. I am woefully unprepared for your plan. But with enough notice I may be able to make it happen. It would be cool to find a place to park, leave the cars, and walk a good 10 miles or so before setting up camp.

I'd be in for that. It's basically what I do when we have our scout weekend camps each month.

Well I certainly like the idea, but not sure I have it together enough. May try to work on that. It seems like a good idea to try it out and you will probably learn quickly what does and does not work. Do post back and let us know.

Maybe there could be a few coaches spread out geographically to help the less prepared get ready ahead of time. A few regional warm ups with BOB primers? If life cooperates I'd be willing to host a gathering in West Jefferson and fire up the grill for lunch or dinner. Think I have enough space to make it comfortable for a day or two,

I'd like to get into something like this. I am really looking forward to scouts when my son is old enough. My dad used to go with us on every trip, I would like to do the same with my boy.
Although I am more in the same boat as Elenaidan and CZfool68 , not sure I am ready for anything hardcore and it has been a long time since I did any winter camping!

Definitely like the idea of warm-ups and coaches. Sounds like a great way for us city-fied folk to get back into this. ;)

Winter camping is where it's at!

If you test your stuff and yourself during the worst times you will have a better idea of what you need and after hiking some distance what you don't need.

The last hiking trip we did to Wilson creek (or wherever it was up there). We did over 8 miles, a few hundred yellowjacket stings, and 2 nights and a 5 hour drive back and forth on a Fri-Sun trip.

Good times - I used a pack that was about 12 pounds including food and water.

Only 12 pounds including food and water?! Yeah, I need to learn to pack again. I would probably have an 80+ pound pack and just have collapsed when the yellowjackets started in. :p

Oh yeah. You ain't camping unless it's February and you wake up with 6" of snow on the ground that wasn't there the night before. And with a 4" tree across your tent 'cause no one thought to keep the new kid from hacking on every tree in camp with his new hatchet.

Last year when it had got down to like 6 degrees I woke up and it was snowing IN my hammock - LOL

I guess I'm just really full of hot air

I'd be interested in doing that if I can work it out.

should we have a BOB /GHB packing party first, I have a few and I am always stuffing odd things into them. Each one will be like a 40lb Christmas present...

A friend and I have been considering putting together a sparse, bare bones type of camping facility on his old farm. He and I have already spoken to the idea of this exact type of outing there, so if y'all are serious I am interested in helping make it happen.

I'm in. What's the general area?

Just sent you one - let me know if it doesn't work

I may be in. Always looking for a good excuse to test out some gear.

Got it and finally sent a reply... should be there now.

Just to be clear, the property I speak of isn't big enough for a long hike but it would be suitable for rudimentary camping in an isolated environment. It is a mostly hardwood forest with rolling topography and 2 creeks. Hiking in could be as little as a few hundred yards. There are no amenities at all.

I look forward to discussing this further. Please ask about anything you can think of.

I am good with not having to hike in very far, but the ability to hike around after I set camp would be good. My feet may be sorry, so it is good to not be too dedicated to miles of trekking. I do prefer cold camping as opposed to feeding myself to skeeters.

This property is about 50 acres compromised mostly of mature hardwood forest. It is near the end of a dead end paved road. There is plenty of room to park pretty much right next to the woods and then hike right in.

My friend has been discussing and starting to set this campground up for a couple months now. The original idea was aimed at having a quiet place in the woods for people to camp in a simplistic way at a place that will be far enough off the beaten path to feel isolated yet not be so far from civilization that inexperienced campers would be intimidated. Since then we have brainstormed all sorts of associated ideas and survivalist style outings have specifically been discussed. Now CFF has come together with a type of camaraderie that is all too rare in this society and this topic is brought up so I hope we can make it happen with some good people from here.

For the more ambitious hikers, there is a good bit of varied terrain to explore. There are some significant grades, big rock outcrops, and believe it or not some old, probably very old, stacked rock structures that appear to be some sort of centuries old walls. We can only speculate at this point what they are, who these people were, and why the structures are there without excavating the area. Thing is, he wants this land to stay as natural as possible to allow people to enjoy what God and our ancestors have built.

This will be a tread lightly place with the emphasis on using and enjoying it while not destroying the natural beauty.

This sound interesting?

Can we chop down trees and make fire? I am a simple man with simple needs. The property sounds very nice. Thanks for trying to set this up.

No, but we encourage people to use storm damage limbs and other dead debris. For those that aren't as inclined to find their own firewood we have selectively harvested plenty of trees that can be used. Upon request we will deliver to each campsite. Since he and I both heat with it exclusively we are constantly processing more.

Stacking a few loose rocks is one thing, but building walls that create at least 8 plateaus running for hundreds of yards along the hillside is something else. I've spent a lot of time in the woods around the area and never seen anything like it. It has to be seen, tough to describe and impossible to know for sure at this point what their use was intended to be.
