Any reason not to buy a YHM Resonator R2 for my first suppressor?

Looking to buy my first suppressor to be used primarily on 16” barreled 5.56 and 308 AR platforms.

The Resonator R2 seems to get great reviews and is a great deal compared to some of the more popular options. Any potential downsides to this suppressor? I have also been looking at the SC Omega 300 and the DA Nomad 30. Is there anything that would make one of these worth the $200+ difference? Tks!

Nope. I love my Resonator. I only wish it was the R2.

The R2 is a couple ounces heavier than the other 2 you mention but otherwise YHM has some really solid offerings these days. I don’t think you can beat the value for what you’re getting.

@BigWaylon

For me, if the price difference is $200, there are specials to be had where they cover the tax stamp for certain suppressors. This is would put them at similar prices. But ultimately, you should get what you want because NFA items take so long to get and are not easily swapped, sold or traded etc. Definitely buy once cry once on NFA items.

After a little additional research, I don't know that I am a fan of YHM's warranty debacle. Of the smaller companies (not SilencerCo, Dead Air, etc), it looks like the Rex Silentium lineup might be the best choice.

I actually snagged an r2 and an r9, killer killer deals. I did a bunch of research and though not as insta famous as others, I think the quality and usability were fantastic.

Completely blown out of proportion…nowhere near a debacle.

Nomad 30 over the 300 all day

The NFA game is such that you’re going to own the item for a very long time. If you don’t see yourself buying anything else for a while (if at all), I’d recommend the “buy once cry once” frame of mind.

The YHM is a great can but I’ve got the LT version of the Nomad 30 and it’s a fantastic suppressor

I don't know enough to get into a detailed discussion of it but from what I think I know, I personally believe they failed their customers who had purchased a suppressor prior to the policy change. Seems like it has led to an awful lot of negative publicity and a loss of at least some amount of their potential customer base. That seems like it's getting awfully debacle-ish.

That aside, I am also reading that using a mounting device other than their own could potentially void their warranty. Right or wrong, that is enough to turn me away as I intend to use Xeno for whatever suppressor I end up with.

This is where I am leaning. Honestly, I kinda have been all along but the possibility of saving a couple hundred bucks seemed worth pursuing.

I’ve bought YHM cans before and after the change. Had zero impact on my decision making.

…and I’d go Omega 300 over Nomad (almost) all day.

@starquestbd22 I’ll say I’ve seen enough of the sleeves come off the the Omega 300s when the glue lets go….that alone is a huge turn off for me. Just the concept of having the serialized “tube” glued onto the baffle stack…ehhh

Specs wise, they’re close:
300: 14.8oz, 7.08”, 1.57” OD
Nomad: 14.5oz, 6.5”, 1.73” OD (slightly larger OD but it’ll have less back pressure and sound better)

The factory Dead Air mounting options are better than the SiCo ASR but both have the ability to run conversions like Plan A etc with the Bravo threads. I’d avoid KeyMo due to length and weight and go with the Xeno or Plan A taper mounts (griffin)

I like the tubeless design of the Nomad.

I mean the Omega 300 set the bar for 30 cal cans in 2015 but there’s new kids on the block 😆

This is exactly what has been pushing me toward the Nomad over the Omega.

Mind if I ask why?
The sleeve is another thing blown completely out of proportion. It’s a DIY fix, if you ever have the “problem”.

If they need to replace your baffle stack, the sleeve moves from the old to the new. Done.

The Omega has been a solid performer since day one. And none of the new kids really outperform it in any noticeable way.

I read of many more issues with Dead Air cans than I do SiCo and YHM combined. Granted, the reports of any brand having major issues is a very few, but vocal, people.

I agree that the warranty issue was blown out of proportion. I have a couple YHM cans and wouldn’t hesitate to buy another. That said, you are correct that the Rex cans are really nice too. I have the MG7 .358 and would love to get a .224. I really like the wide K cans but I’d probably stick to a normal full size can for my first, like the 3 you mentioned in your OP.

At the end of the day, you have to sell yourself on your choice because you’ll most likely be stuck with it forever.

Yeah the fact that it has a sleeve period, not just the fact that it can come unglued, is my issue. Seems like a cheap “solution” that others have done better since

I’m no dead air fan boy by any means. I’ve got one can of theirs but not gonna die on the hill of dead air trying to white knight them. But I will say the online suppressor community is a lot larger now than it was when the SiCo 300s were cutting their teeth

lol wut?
suppressor addiction is usually a comorbidity found with BRD

Rex Silentium makes some great cans. I have several.

Nomad has no barrel restriction so if you tend to enjoy really dumb things like 7.5" 5.56, Dracos, or any short 308 gun the nomad would be a better choice.

That being said anything dead air you are paying a premium for the name and dead air is not even making the dang thing KGM is. Only suppressor I own is a nomad, it's expensive, and big but I enjoy it. I do not think the nomad stands on a hill of greatness that no other cheaper suppressor cannot match.

Omega issues are documented just as well as the numerous sandman and nomad issues when dead air switched to kgm for manufacturing. I think it's kind of a wash there... I would try to shoot both of them and if they are the same get which one you think looks cooler.

Thanks for the reply. Kinda related...I was reading on another site that KGM recently took on a large government contract and has ceased producing their own KGM brand suppressors for the general public. Kinda makes me wonder if that has anything to do with why Silencer Shop currently has almost no DA cans in stock. A fairly large LGS that is a SS "powered" dealer has a Nomad but it's $100 higher than Silencer Shop online. But I am wondering, if I were to buy through SS (when they have it in stock) and have it processed through the LGS, will they charge me a transfer fee? If so, it'll probably end up being a wash either way.

KGM had gift certificates on the prize table at the last 3 Run n Guns I've attended, as recently as last weekend.

If you buy a silencer through their network, the dealer is not supposed to add any fees.

The one exception to that statement, or at least the one I’m aware of…is if you need to use a separate dealer for collecting prints. The dealer can charge a fee to use the kiosk if you’re not buying the silencer from them. Now, that might just be for buying something directly from the dealer instead of from SS, but it might also apply if your preferred LGS doesn’t have a kiosk?

My lgs did not have a kiosk at the time. I walked into another shop and used their kiosk for fingerprints for free. That is not normal. The shop has to pay for the kiosk so normally they charge a small fee to use it. (Edit small fee if they are not selling you the can)

To enter an item into the SS database to use their kiosk and online features for a non SS can there is another fee on top of whatever your LGS wants. My buddy recently paid $35 (iirc) to do that for a can ordered from BDU.

So you could have compounding fees

I ended up going ahead with the Nomad 30 at my LGS. SilencerShop still shows it out of stock and my LGS had one. He had been pricing me the Nomad-L so as it turns out, the regular Nomad 30 was only $50 more locally than at SS. They charged a $35 processing fee to do the photos, prints, and other paperwork but it's a one-time fee so future NFA purchases will not incur this fee. Now to wait. Guess it'll make a good Christmas gift.
