Hello boys and girls , I’ve got an old Remington wingmaster magnum that I bought from a friend . It has been sitting a while so the first time I went out to shoot it we found the trigger would go click with no boom 🤯.
Took it apart found grease that had gotten hard around the firing pin .
Cleaned it and lit off a few rounds out the back door . I’ve subsequently patterned it with 00 Buck and it’s a very nice pattern at 35 yards .
My main question is how can I date this thing ? Yes I’ve looked on the web and found many date code lists but this shotgun doesn’t have a year prefix on it . Barrel may not be original so that is inconclusive.
Should I email Remington ?
Thoughts …

Jon
Ps
I’ll post some pictures when I wipe it off . It sets in the living room on front door detail . Gun oil and dog hair are very attracted to each other lol

Rem 870 are generally dated by the code on the barrel, near the receiver. Only problem is when folks swap barrels. Forends can help at times.

Remington did not use a s/n prefix from 1950 to 1968. I think the magnums were first released in 1955. Barrel dating may get you close. To get exact date you will have to contact Remington, if they still do it. Had them try to track down a 870tc s/n for me, many years ago. They could only tell me it was built in the custom shop, sometime in 1951.

Don’t hold me to this, but this looks like an early model, based on the corncob style forend (similar to model 31), the non letter prefix serial number, and it appears to have a banded barrel ( model 31 barrels and 870 lugs banded together with the band. I would say 1950-1954. Tough to see the barrel stamping though. Can you tell us the letter/numbers on the barrel stamp?
