Just picked up a viper pst 3-15x44.it’s going on a rem 700 308 what’s everyone’s thoughts on this for learning the fundamentals of long distance shooting?(also rifle will be used to hunt with)

No experience with the PST but I hunt with a Viper HS 3-15x50 BDC on my Remington 700 in 308. It’s an excellent combo. I’ve learned to know where to hold at whatever distance I’m shooting C2968A3B-F6B2-4DB1-92C4-F1B6FB5ED824.jpeg

I have a 3-15 pst on my rem 700 in 308. I took a long range class earlier this year with it and shot out to 1200 yards. Never had an issue.

Good to know.was hoping the 3-15 would give me enough to get to 1000 yards eventually.but also wanted to stay with something that was low enough power that I can still use it to hunt here in eastern NC where you may need to take a 40 yard shot.

Yup the 3-15 PST is a very good scope in its price range. Good features and reticle. You should have plenty of scope magnification to get to 1000 yards and then some.

Which reticle you have?

Ebr2d.couldn’t beat it for the price 550$ from europtics.it was a closeout for that reticle.

During the class, I never went higher than 12x. I felt like that was plenty for me. I like the low end power for the same reasons as you.

Yup can’t beat it at that price. They have been running those at a real good price for a while. It’s a steal.

Yeah don’t worry about the power range. I shot out to 2500 yards on 17x before with no problems. 15x will get you out as far as we can shoot around here.

My dad got one of those pst gen 2’s and i like it and want one for my ar-15 for out to 600 yard steel. But i didn't care a hole lot for the ff plane. I was looking a a viper HST 4-16x44 for $90 less. Is the gen 2 that much better or will the hst be fine for me?
Thks

Yes the PST Gen II is worth the extra $90. They do make a SFP version of the 3-15 if you wanted SFP. What don’t you like about the FFP?

Just don’t like how the reticle gets so small on 4 power. But then again it will be on highest power most if the time

That's why I asked as that is what I thought the answer would be. Most getting into FFP say that but they don't account for when using the scope it will be the rare occasion they are that low in the power range and even if they were it would be for a target so close that they wouldn't need the reticle for holds anyways and turning on the illumination allows for easy use. Where you will be using the scope the most in the 10x+ range the reticle being in FFP for holds for quick shots is important and much more so than the lowest power use. Use the FFP more and you will see that they actually do better for quicker shots and holds.

Thanks, the glass is great on dads scope. 2 things i like about the Viper HST is it is 8oz lighter and i like the looks of the turrents better. But i was afraid the glass wouldn't be as good as i would hope for.

The turrets do look different as they don't have a zero stop, which is a nice feature. The 8 ounces you probably won't feel on the rifle. There are a couple reticle options on the PST Gen II that will save you money also. The 2D and 2C you can get them for around $550. Not sure what reticle your dad's has but these two are very workable reticles. Take a look.

The gen 2 is a big upgrade. Wish mine had the 10mil per rev like the gen 2.

I also rarely pay the premium for FFP. As you say the reticle is rarely if ever used at low power so the FFP advantage only comes at the high end of the scale. Any scenario where I was using it at 12X I figure I could just as easy use it at max mag 15X. Also I could use it at half power and just do the simple math, and do it with a full size reticle. I would only seriously consider paying for FFP in a truly high power scope (>20X) where max mag could be overkill at a distance I would need to range or holdover.

FFP doesn’t only come at the high end. Being able to use the reticle fast on any power is an advantage. Mirage might be up where you need to dial to 10x and with FFP you can still use the reticle. Also half power is not always half and the hold might be off. If you do that you should check it to make sure before hand.

And there really isn’t a premium. FFP are usually a little more but because there is more into the optic construction but deals can be found as I posted above. Those two are cheaper than the sfp 3-15.

Is FFP for everyone or every situation? No but for an AR shooting like he described the FFP would be my choice.

Well i ordered the PST-3154 and a sv-5 throw lever for my Pst Gen 2 1-6x24
I figured for the extra $90 over the hst version it was worth it for the glass alone

Well i had to order a set of high duel dovetail rings for dads rifle because the medium rings on it were to low for the pst gen 2 scope. They came in from amazon today and i put them in and sure enough one if the lower ring halves was out of spec where the 2 rings halves connect. So i had to reorder another set tonite. Bummer cause i was hoping to sight in his 6 ackley on thanksgiving.

That’s odd as it’s only a 44mm objective. I haven’t used dovetail rings in decades but even in .82” picitinny rings they fit but must be the height of the base. Well hopefully you can get it together soon.

Well it has a pretty big shilen select match barrel on it, thats what caused the issue there. Had it been a standard varmint profile it would have worked. But as least my new PST Gen 2 scooe comes tomorrow so i can get it put on my ar😁
