I went today to a local UPS and did the electronic fingerprints using PrintScan. Came home and tried to download to the computer. Don’t know if I did it right. It won’t let me see the file or email it to my FFL. I downloaded the file to the computer but it won’t let me open it. Is that normal? Am I doing something wrong?

you need a program made to view every kind of file you open. do you have something installed that can handle whatever format you have them in?

also, i'm interested in the process. looks like f/v is the closest place, but it's about an hour away.
Might just be easier (and a whole lot cheaper) to do cards.
mind saying what it cost you?

They are in EFT format. My wife has a Mac computer. I definitely don’t know how to use the Mac. Not sure what program I need to open it?

$65 but supposedly won’t ever need to do it again?

that's probably by design. if you can open it you can edit it. there are probably checksums built in so that you can't forge it easily.
Also, don't use mac. mac only wants you to do what apple says you can do, forward the email with the file to your dealer and just change the subject line.

I do have an old work computer. I will try on when I do have an old work computer I will try it on when later tonight. It won’t let me forward it to him. They emailed me a link which goes to their website and I have to enter my information to be able to download it. I only have 24 hours once I click the link to download it or I have to do it all over again.

so can you just not open it, or does it not even appear in your downloads folder?
if you can find the file in your downloads, i'd think you should still be able to email it out even if your computer doesn't know what to do with it... but i don't use mac so i'm no expert. I'd try using a couple different browsers to download and email it. eventually something works, even if apple doesn't want you to do it.

Pretty sure you can’t open it outside of the fingerprinting system.

Because they have a fingerprinting system.
OK I suppose that makes sense. It just worried me there for a minute because it says I have 24 hours to download the file.

Ok well after the 999999 time trying to email it to my FFL, it FINALLY went through. Still can’t open it so who knows. When I try to it says “There is no application set to open the document xxxxx.eft”. So y’all may be right about it only being able to open using the fingerprint software. I copied the file to my desktop and to a thumb drive. Hopefully I won’t have to go through the fingerprinting process for future purchases. I shouldn’t for $65. I’ll let y’all know if it works and goes through in 10 months. 😂

Of course we’re right. It’s how computers work. If you don’t have a program to deal with a file type, you can’t view that file. 🤓

I am, for the most part, computer ignorant. I know enough to get by. I know nothing of her Mac and don’t like using it other than for the internet.

Thanks for the reassurance and help

This open source software package from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) will supposedly allow you to view the contents of the EFT file on Windows, Mac or linux, but you'll need some computer knowledge to get it to work.

I may play with it once I get an EFT.

i wonder if i should get it done... i don't do that many form 1... and all my form 4 will just go through SS for the forseeable future. but i do have 2 form 1 to do... and a fingerprint kit...
it would be nice to just upload and be done rather than rolling a good set and mailing priority with signature
