Apple Inc. is canceling a decadelong effort to build an electric car, according to people with knowledge of the matter,
abandoning one of the most ambitious projects in the history of the company.

Seems ridiculous to begin with. Stick to becoming a great OEM partner offering enhanced CarPlay features, maybe even while car operating systems/ECM’s if you want to get deeper in automotive.

However, I suspect their mentality that their way is the only way and requirement to have a high level of control (everything is proprietary, must jail break to access basic functions, no expandable memory etc) would be a hurdle with most OEM’s. I could see the control being an underlying driver in wanting to develop their own.

Apple doesn't build anything, they outsource the work to offshore facilities. China is frequently the place where they turn for factory work. Problem is, they'd have to accept the fact that China will steal their plans and build clone cars of the Apple car. I would think that's a deal killer to them.

They will figure out eventually. There is too much money to be made from the data the cars collect.

That's why it makes more sense for them to sink the money into CarPlay/partnering with existing makes for subscription services. They harvest all that data through your connected devices, without the risk of taking on automobile manufacture.

Genuinely curious, what data would they collect that the iPhone in the drivers pocket doesn’t already?
There are already sensors built into vehicles that monitor eye movement, drowsiness, etc. At some point I'm sure they'll be correlating eye movements to registered billboards and pupil dilation to radio ad responses.
