Hey yall, I wanted to get some opinions on this I'm trying to get my CHP process started as early as possible, I will turn 21 in April and I have already completed the 8 hour training course and got my certificate. What I am trying to figure out is could I go ahead and fill out the application but schedule my fingerprinting on or after my b-day or should I just wait and start the application on my birthday? I want to try to minimize the wait time as much as possible. Thanks!

You could get a non resident permit in Maine or New Hampshire in the meantime while you wait, they issue at 18 and it’s valid in nc … That’s what I did. If you don’t feel comfortable carrying under 21 you can still wait till your 21st to actually carry and still be legal, then you can apply the day you turn 21 and carry with the non resident until nc issues your permit.

I tried this before my 21st, didn’t work. I was able to take my NC concealed carry class before my 21st but had to wait until I was actually 21 to make an appointment

I believe I’d call and see whether they will schedule an appointment for your birthday.
Ok ill give them a call and see what they say, thanks!

Just use a permit purchase until then. That’s what I do, nc issues purchase permits at 18 for private sale and at 21 you can use it at an ffl

My younger son had already taken his class and was able to schedule his appointment at the sheriff's department on the morning of his 21st birthday. But this was before all this rona crap.

Congrats on coming of age. It’s good to have some of the younger crowd on here and out in the community.
Thank you! Glad to be here.

Problem Is I like collecting and it gets very tedious having to constantly apply for purchase permits.

I am hoping they will let me do the same we will see.

Never realized this was an option, you can legally carry under 21? if so I have been missing out.

Yep, nc law allows you to carry with a non resident permit. And nc law doesn’t say anything about having to be 21 to conceal carry. It just says you have to be 21 to get a nc concealed carry permit. I’ve also went over this with my lawyer and people at the department of justice and they also say that it’s legal as well. Some officers may not think so though so if you go this route I’d recommend open carrying in your car (you can legally open carry in nc without a permit at 18) and concealing everywhere else since your most likely to have an interaction with an officer at a traffic stop.

well I will be applying tonight. Any other requirements for getting an out of state permit? I always thought you needed to work or live in the state of the permit.

Not in New Hampshire you don't, it's one of the few states with non-resident permits that will basically issue it to anyone that isn't felon.

Nope. Just need a valid id and a 100 dollar check made out to the nh treasurer. Maine and New Hampshire are the only states I know of that issue to 18 year olds, but Maine requires a training class, Nh does not.

Still need a nc purchase permit to buy handguns but atleast you can legally carry. If you have any more questions I’m happy to help.
