Being a total AR newbie and not knowing what has and hasn't been tried and worked/flopped I ask......
Is there any reason (logical) that I couldn't configure my Bushmaster to be an AR "scout" type rifle using a pistol scope and rings of sufficient height??
I had a Red Dot and it does okay at close range but not so good at longer ranges (100 or so) So I thought I would put a scope on it but then I'm stuck with a scope in my face at short ranges. That's when the "Scout" idea hit me. Now it may have either hit too hard or not hard enough but it seems like it might be feasible.
Since EVERYBODY & ANYBODY has more AR experience than I do, what could I be letting myself in for???
Please try to be gentle and use terms even I can understand..... Thanks...

Since AR irons are about 1.5" above the rail you're looking at a scope set so uncomfortably high that it will be difficult to get a good cheek weld and see thru the scope. There are plenty of people who shoot them that way tho by mounting a scope on the carry handle:

A 1-4x scope might be a good compromise.

my buddy put a 2-7x33 Leupold VX-1 on his flat top with high rings, and it absolutely kicks butt. The front sight doesn't interfere with sight picture at all even at 2x.

The current VX-1 can be found under $200 online easily now. It's the old VX-2 from 5 years ago IIRC.

Fixed carry handle?

You might try to test out a red dot plus a flip to side magnifier. I never warmed up to that setup but lots of others have.

or, get yourself a 1-4x optic. At 1x, you won't feel like the scope is crowding you.

If you have deep pockets try an ACOG.

Oops.... my bad, I should have said I have a flat top (removed the carry handle) & a Midwest forearm so I have a rail from the rear all the way to the muzzle. The scope would be set far enough forward for proper eye relief depending on what scope I decide on....about 18 to 20"....

I searched but couldn't find anything, would you have a link?? My front sight is gone, it got removed when I recontoured the gas block for the Midwest forearm so that won't be an issue....

Academy and Cabelas both have them for aroubd 180 free shipping

Looks like academy went off sale but 199 is still good and in stock local to you.

http://www.academy.com/shop/pdp/leupold-vx-1-2---7-x-33-riflescope

Its short lightweight and bright. Aero Precision makes a great cantilever 1 pc mount for a flat top AR. I dont mount optics om handguards but thats just me

Thank you, I'm heading to Academy in 5 minutes to pick up the ring/mount and if they have the scope I'm set!!
With that said I may have a mount/ring combo and a scope for sale tomorrow.... In case anyone would need such a thing..
Regardless of the outcome I'll post pics so we can all have a good laugh (at my expense).... OR.... learn something...

I think you will enjoy it immensely. It's a lot of glass for the money, and a better value than a lot of the Chinese tacticool stuff.

Just make sure you get the 1" version mount or one that does both. And I don't bother with 20mm elevation rise mounts on a carbine esp with a 7x max power

@Bailey Boat

The VX1 2-7 that's been mentioned just showed up on a Natchez email flyer for $168.

I'll admit it "looks" a little different but when I shot it this morning I forgot all about it's ugliness. When you shoulder the gun there isn't any "looking for the reticle" it jumps right out into your eye. I also liked the fact that I didn't have to close an eye in order to have the sight picture. Personally I like it!!!
My thought is the 2x7 and leave it on 2x unless I need additional magnification then it's at my fingertips. The Nikon P Series mount (2 piece) has the perfect height. The scope is a Leupold 2X handgun scope I had lying in the scope drawer. Will be replaced.....
