Depends on what you are planning to do with the rifle. 6-24x is a bit overkill if you are planning to use it to hunt with, out to a couple hundred yards. 6x will make it hard to pick up a close target and at 24x the field of view is going to be very small.
Stretching its abilities is dependent on what you built. If you've got a 16" pencil barrel, then you really won't be doing much past 600. If you've got a high quality 20"+ and you're using a high BC bullet, then 1000y is doable. Historically, 308 goes subsonic at around 800y, which is where the accuracy is gone. With newer/better bullets, that isn't the case if you're using those rounds. I'm currently working up a load with the ELDM 168gr Hornady bullet. With a BC1 of .529, it should be very capable of 1000y. I wouldn't even consider it if I were using the old standard of 168gr HPBT bullets from Sierra or Hornady.I’m interested in long range precision shooting at paper targets. My eyes ain’t what they used to be. I would like to be able to see what I’m aiming at 1000 meters. I know that’s stretching my rifles capability at this point in its life, but it can be tuned a little I’m sure.
Worse case I could put it on a different rifle.
