Astigmatism and scopes

I absolutely agree with you on the gimmicky circles, donuts, etc.. Also bdc etched reticle as the best for second focal plane. I will also add Vortex is not bad stuff just not great glass in the low and mid price but more than adequate for 95% of the market. Having worked in glass manufacturing (fiber optics for data) and touring night vision optics for our sister plant, high quality glass is very expensive to produce with complex recipes. The Germans, French, and Americans are the leaders in glass technologies. Japan is closing fast.

My Steiner kind of spoiled me with the schott glass.

I've got one of these i bought for my 10/22 takedown. Its a 3x prism with dual illumination works great with my astigmatism and they're only around $100bucks

They are. Image is reflected multiple times as opposed to just shined on the glass. I have to hand pick red dots but eotech sights never give me an issue. Corrective lenses also help
I heard EoTechs are better for astigmatisms than regular red dots. I cannot confirm though. I have a .5 astigmatism (within the range of normal) in my shooting eye and they all look perfectly fine to me. It depends on your eye and the optic. It's always better to try before you buy.
My experience was the EO Tech's dot was a cluster of 6 dots. The dot, ring and hash marks washed out the target, especially in low light. I sold them for Aimpoints, and keep the dot on the dimmer side.
I need +3 for readers and +1.25 for distance, I was very surprised that I dont need any correction to see crystal clear with a 4x ACOG.

Is that this one?

It may be a newer model i bought mine several years ago. This is the one I have i bought it off Amazon. Here's the model info
Monstrum Tactical S330P 3x Ultra-Compact Prism Scope
I have a Holosun 503cu it was recommended by someone with astigmatism at a local shop. My astigmatism is clear with the Holosun also.

Got the Raven today. Haven’t mounted it to anything, but first impressions:

1. it’s heavy...yeah, the weight is listed online but I didn’t even notice that until after I’d ordered
2. eye relief is 3.5”...never had a fixed magnification optic like this, so I’ll have to see how that works. Have 1x Vortex SPARCs on most everything else
3. Combination of 1 & 2 probably means it’s not going on the 15-22 pistol I recently bought. Will use a SPARC on it and consider putting this on my main 5.56 SBR. It’ll help with both astigmatism, not worrying about a dead battery, and 3X magnification.

Will definitely consider this one for a couple other ARs if it works well.

I have learned that the more the Anti-Reflective coating the less distortion to astigmatisms. I see multiple dots on Trijicon MROs, Aimpoints, etc. A buddy had a Meprolight that was really green looking through it. I could see the ”X” as clear as day. A different buddy said he had a MRO clone that was really green looking glass with a red dot. He brought it in and the dot was clear. I asked a guy from Steiner/Burris, he said indeed it helps with astigmatism issues, but most gripe about the greenish hue.

Recently acquired a Holosun 507K

I can’t use most mini red dots on pistols as I see a smear.
This one has a similar reticle preen as an eotech-
Circle with dot, circle only or dot only.
It’s small, the reticle is the best I have seen for a mini.

I strongly suspect that you’ve just never “setup” a scope properly.

any scope of decent quality will have an adjustable ocular (closer to your eye) lens that just needs a twist to focus. Use that adjust to make the cross hairs focus and you’re good to go.
I cannot get any scope to entirely focus for my astigmatismic eyes.

I didnt read through all the replies so someone has maybe recommended it, but the Vortex Spitfire AR sight will be going on my next AR. I have an eye astigmatism as well, but I still use a Sig Sauer Romeo 5. Wasn't that bad when I first got the Romeo, so now I kinda got used to it. But the Vortex Spitfire AR sight was designed for people with astigmatisms in mind.

Sorry if I missed it but has anyone seen an improvement using a green reticle vs red? I will be buying a micro dot for an ak pistol build and have had good luck with holosun and may try a green optic from them or go with a green trijicon mro.

Nope. For me, color doesn't affect the distortion from astigmatism. It does help to have red/green as a choice depending on what's in your field of view.

Astigmatism contacts are very expensive. I choice a few years ago to forego correcting it due to cost but man it’s tough. Another thing I did since I was correcting distance and didn’t want readers is get contacts with less power in one eye for reading. It was suggested by my doctor. I’ll add the Sig handgun sight is the better than any of the others I’ve looked thru. But I don’t use one on a pistol because I can’t acquire the dot fast enough to feel comfortable.

Yeah I use disposable one- day contacts and readers. It allows me to walk around and drive with nothing.

Back on topic, my Holosun 510 is fantastic with regard to our special problems. Lots of other red dots are ridiculously fuzzy. But the Holosun is crisp and clear. Dunno why or how. But it works.
