Wow…lots of potential .gov power grabbing under the guise of banning TikTok. Seems very CCP-ish using the Chinese app as an excuse…Patriot Act deja vu anyone? The ”pandemic” power comedown has .gov jonesing for a new fix??? You know something is up when the Ds and Rs both want it! 🤨

Just a few highlights…

.gov is concerned that the chinese are spying on us! every 3 letter .gov agency is spying on us, every e-mail/call/discussion/fart is recorded - how about we forbid the .gov 3 letter agencies ability to spy on Americans first.

It isn’t about spying on us (although it obviously should not be allowed on .gov devices). It is about the fact that the CCP can use it to program (mostly younger) Americans by controlling what they see. Could easily shift elections a few points.

Don’t get all worked up. Lindsey Graham is on the case (if you haven’t seen this, you absolutely must)! 😢

if the government wants to ban apps from government devices, ok. but a general ban on an app/webservice is no bueno (and really, how enforceable is this?)
A couple of weeks ago, a friend tried to post something to a Telegram group I’m part of. It was pretty innocuous. It was a picture of Jesus with a lost of facts pertaining to the number 3 and it had the Masonic symbol of a G with a (drawing) compass. For some reason (???) the Google (play store) version of the app censored the post and popped up a guy wagging his finger NO instead. I ended up downloading the straight version from the app company instead.

This is how things that are no bueno will be dealt with.

That is not what it's about...The government only wants media it can control, internet forums and podcast are currently out of government control. The government want the same control it has over the M5M, legacy media, FB, and Twitter.

True but .gov are also using the information they gather to affect the elections.

Graham went to Pelosi's school: "we must past the bill to find out what's in it"

Limpy Gladhand co-sponsored the bill a few days ago and “I don’t know nuthin’“ is his answer! Daddy McCain is smiling from his grave!

Oh, the idiotic bill is definitely about spying on us but the primary risk from TikTok is that they can influence US public opinion directly and significantly. That is the problem that needs solving, not data privacy.

The government is using TikTok as a cover. TikTok is taking revenue from google and FB, The 26 and under age groups are using it to search over google, by a large amount. It's all about the money and control.

Of course. Never let a crisis go to waste. And always name bills the opposite of what they really do.

The point is that the public debate (and political blathering) about data privacy with TikTok/CXO is completely missing (or more likely, purposely avoiding) main risk.

Which of the big tech companies will be given a free antitrust pass if they buy TikTok and agree to give all the information to the government?
Amazon?
Google?
Meta?
Microsoft?

Is there anyone else?

TikTok is cancer and we'd all be much better off without it.
We would be even better off if our government wasn't so authoritarian as to believe it could ban the use of a phone app.

Authoritarianism is just as big a problem as Chinese spyware.

This Tiktok bill is patriot act #2 that will give the president ability to control information that he determined poses a threat to national security

And that is why they let that balloon fly all the way across country before shooting it down. Right.

Didn't a lot of kids phone in saying that they would commit suicide if it was banned? Proof right there that it's not good.

Found it...

Brought to you by the same group of idiot asshats that thought they could stop internet piracy by mandating how DNS works.

The founding fathers put restrictions in who could vote. We need restrictions on who can legislate.

I detest TikTok but I detest most social apps.

I don't like "banning" things and this bill has way too many "gotcha's" just like the Patriot Act that don't bode well long term.

We all know how well the TSA worked out and the FISA court and the Patriot Act. All should be repealed and buried in the "don't ever do this again" pile of history.

Probably some better way of cutting the Chinese data fire drill out, but if stupid people want to fling their data all over the world and accept the consequences of such actions then it's on the idiots.

"Banning" it from state / fed provided devices is a different beast. Lots of 'apps' should be banned from those particular devices and harsh penalties actually taken for anyone that violates those requirements.

Personally I find it laughable that the Government is worried about a foreign actor invading the Privacy of Americans by gathering their mobile data; especially, when 75,000 companies in world do the same thing and all sell their data to the US government.

The mobile phone IS your .gov tracker in REAL-TIME. We always thought there would have to be a person watching each of us for us to be under their thumb. Nope, Nope, Nope. All they have to do is set up queries from browsing behavior, cookies, geodata, time frames, contacts and even Microphone -- They know everything. EVERYTHING.

**EDIT: Including this Post right here! -- But the Alphabet Agencies all know me by now.

I've been saying that to my friends and family for forever. They always get weird about having alexa, or worried their tv has spyware/a cam, or worried about their roomba having the footprint of their house. If the corporations/government want any info from you, they get what they can from mobile providers and phone manufacturers. I think your phone GPS would pretty accurately lay out your floor plan with more information on where you are than anything else.
