Understood however the Mt. Mitchell repeater is around 6600’ elevation and if I’m not mistaken it’s the highest 2M repeater east of the Mississippi. I had a friend who lived in that area and could pick up Mitchell in his basement on a handheld. If I’m not mistaken there are five states that can hit that repeater. They were very active with multiple nets at one time anyway.I think he is running the HT indoors, and even with the upgraded antenna .... often iffy.
Plus he'd have to wait to listen to traffic. I assume these repeaters are fairly active.
It's a lot more interesting once you get a license, anyway.
Used to chat with him every workday while we commuted. We had much of the same route. One morning, it was a bad morning, I was merging into BR 85 in High Point and he made a comment about seeing me and that I had to be doing 90+. Not quite, but close. I also used to do the testing sessions with him and his group. Haven't spoken with him in years, but it sounds like he’s recovered pretty well from his stroke a while back.I’ve spoken to AJ4TF many, many times. Never met in person but on the repeaters.
I’d suggest you try the Mt. Mitchell repeater @ 145.19 with -600 offset. Also Caesars Head repeater @146.61 also -600 offset and see if they work for you.
