Anybody ever live there? My wife has that "crazy" plan of moving there to be closer to her grandkids.

Lived in Beaumont for 10 years, passed through Baytown daily on my way to BP Texas City. Close to Houston, a lot of business traffic. A few good eating places, with many more close by. Exxon Baytown is a good place to hire into, with salaries nominally 6 figures and up. Pollution mostly cleaned up.
Hope you like it hot and very humid.
Exxon employees who live there reported they enjoyed it, near major healthcare, baseball, soccer, football and good schools.

I would most likely be working at my existing company's office in Houston or from home, at least my wife thinks my company will make that happen since I have worked for them for about 35 years. Not quite so sure about that.

I'm near Beaumont, about a hour east of Baytown. From what I've seen, Baytown is pretty nice. It's just a short hop on to Houston and, yes it gets hot in the summer. Come on, it's pretty good over here.

Good place to witness a hurricane one day and the Summers are very nice if you like 100+. I just got back from Killeen, Texas on a 10 day trip. I love the upper north section of Texas but the Summers are too brutal from Killeen to Mexico.

Depends on where you work is
Be prepared for an absolutely brutal commute if you have to travel to city center on I-10.
If your work is more on the NE side or so of Houston look a little farther north. Dayton is a small town that would be a good investment now. Low crime … and Liberty Co has way lower property taxes (which are Texas’s way of coping with no state income tax). The US 90 is not a clear shot during peek traffic but it’s better than I10.

Be careful making a moving decision based on the anticipated actions of others. Bought a house, moved closer to my grandchild and get to see him about once a month. Saw him more when I lived 4 hours away. Just prepare yourself if it doesn’t work out as expected.

Can I give you my wife's number?

I loved my time in Houston but be prepared. The state bird is the mosquito. 😜 EVERYTHING is bigger in Texas.
