Beer brewing thread

Lot to catch up on.
Since last pot , 2017, brewed up a few small batch beers from extract with added grains. Few wines, blueberry is in the secondary fermenter right now. Has a heating pad on it as that room is unheated.
Got some beer stuff for Christmas that I will start when it warms up a bit.
Made "Sketter Pee", otherwise known as lemon wine. Very good and as my dad pointed out "That stuff could sneak up and h hurt you.

Just came across this old thread, got out of the beer brewing hobby and sold off all of my stuff, but picked up a new hobby that is similar to brewing beer in ways but........

Interesting this thread pops up now. Not beer, but I got my first ever batch of wind bubbling Sat, and a got my first ever batch of cider going yesterday. Keeping it simple for now...

I'm listening to 20 gallons of mead bubble along. Blueberry, peach and standard. For beginners mead is low cost and delicious.

The second glass tonight is the German Pilsner. Yup it’s a Pilsner. A bit stronger and a little after bite. Definitely a little more hoppy than the cream ale. Overall, Yup a Pilsner.

This is a great thread. I have always been curious about brewing and distillation. My father and uncle were well known Moonshine distillers in Durham NC 50 years ago. Both spending time in jail for their (cough, cough) "passion". I have just recently become acquainted with a new neighbor who was a professional brewer for a beer company out of Louisiana. He has some very nice home brews. The kind you would gladly pay for. He has degrees in distilling and chemistry. I look forward to checking this thread regularly, seeing the pics and hearing tasting notes of your creations.

Don’t sit on the sideline get in the game. It really is an everybody gets a trophy sport. You make your own trophy.

I have been brewing for about 16 years. Started with extract and quickly moved to AG. At one point I was brewing about 150 gallons a year. For the past several years, I brew about 20 gallons a year; mostly IPAs, but like to keep a complex big stout on tap to age for about a year. My kegerator will hold 6 kegs; but I have 3 on tap now.
Two 5 gallon batches of IPAs and a nice Brown Ale that is about to kick. Here is my set up - able to do 10 gallon batches at a time. Got to watch that boil kettle close when doing 10 gallons as it is full!

Impressive.

Transferred a Hefe Weizen from the carboy to the Corny keg yesterday. Installed new seals and fittings and top with pressure release valve. That makes 3 complete and fully operational kegs. I still have 2 more kegs to replace/install seals, fittings and tops. I will up-fit those when I transfer my next couple of batches from the carboys.

Brewed up a Belgian Blonde this afternoon. Temperature finally dropped enough to pitch the yeast. Mr. Bubbles is sitting by the wood heater waiting for the fermentation to start.

I like blondes! Did you measure the sugars on this? I'm curious about the octane level.

Transferred the Belgian Blonde into a keg yesterday. Alcohol content is just over 4%.
I couldn’t use the other 2 kegs I have. Both of them are missing the gas side dip tube. I will order those today.

Brewed a Belgian wit yesterday. It’s in the carboy waiting for the yeast to get going.
I decided to go all grain and picked up a 10 gallon cooler from Home Depot. I went to the local homebrew supply store to buy a valve and screen and a brew kit or two. I got all the parts so that will be todays project. That’s the good news.
The supply store is closing its doors by 1 January. They said the tap house side of the business has been carrying the supply side for a while. They can’t continue to lose money so they are closing the store.
They are selling all the inventory. Everything is 35% off. I walked out with 6 kits. I will need to find another supply store. This sucks.

Yeah, my friend closed his this past year in Holly Springs. He was trying add his own beer to sell and had all the state permits but the town was just not working with him. With loss of $ from Covid, internet sales loss, and crap from town... he said screw it

I decided to brew another batch this weekend. Decided on Tuesday. Filled the carboy with cleaner and water. Planned on transferring the cleaning media to flush empty kegs today. That’s not happening now.
I walk outside and my 6 1/2 gallon carboy is shattered and empty. It’s still standing but cracked all over.
Lesson learned.

Picked up another kegerator yesterday in Ocean Isle off Craigslist. Exactly the same as my other one for $100. Came with single tap tower, 2 used empty co2 tanks, gauges, tap, hoses, and a new full co2 tank.
While driving to the sellers house I got a sixth sense/spidy sense tingle. Couldn’t put my finger on what was alerting me. Thought perhaps being alone and meeting someone on Craigslist might be the trigger. Sale went well with the older couple I purchased from. Loaded my prize and drove away.
I get get five or six houses away and it happens. I always scan my surroundings and have to do a double take. There is a 400 plus pound senior citizen in his front yard naked as the day he was born. I’m thinking oops senile grandpas done escaped and nobody noticed yet. I get to the driveway and there is his wife bare naked in all her glory. She was waving at me like we were good friends. My reflexes caused me to look away. My curiosity made me look again. She started waving again. I smiled and waived back and kept driving.
Turns out I was next to a nudist colony. Lol lived here most of my life and never new this place existed. Whispering pines nudist colony. Pull it up on google. Yup, they have pictures in the gallery section.

Brewed a Hefe Weizen last night. It was all grain. Brewed a malt extract kit with my son as well. Set him up with everything to brew for a Christmas gift. We finally got to brew it last night. Went to bed about 3am. Good times!
Sitting here drinking coffee and noticed my batch is already foaming up on top and the bubbler is burping. Wow that was fast!
