If you were to pick the most reasonably priced, readily available 9mm SD round, what would it be?

I've carried 124gr +P+ GDHPs for the last eight yrs or so but I'm getting sorta low and they're kinda hard to find.

I found some IMI 124gr +P for 60cpr.

HST running $1.25pr and old school XTP for 76cpr.

Underwood has always treated me well, and if you catch it in stock, it is often quite affordable.

I've been finding and shooting a lot of Federal Punch recently. It shoots really well. I have been finding HST regularly. HST is $10 more than the Punch. I get the Punch at Academy for $22 for 20. Supposedly the HST is more "barrier blind" than the Punch. I found the accuracy in both equally excellent. I tried the IMI stuff and it wasn't bad but not as accurate for me as the Federal offerings.

I don't know about reasonably priced.....but they were all about a buck a round.

In addition to HST, Hornady critical defense, Remington golden sabre?? Winchester Ranger, sig now makes their own product line, Buffalo Bore, etc.

Save the self defense ammo.....some people use it and replace with new ammo every year, but it's not necessary. It will last a very long time.

Federal HST’s are my number one, but pretty much any Gold Dot in any flavor will do the job. I carry GD 124gr +P’s.

I like 147Gr V Crowns. Shield seems to like them too. Accurate and less snappy than 115gr.

Define "reasonably priced" for something that ultimately you're only going to shoot enough to ensure reliability and then carry for the day you might end up needing it.

And then rotating it for new on whatever schedule you come up with.

When it comes to SD,, I'd prefer to carry what I'd consider the best. Money be derned. I want to KNOW I can trust my life to it. I make sure my gun likes the ammo & it's accurate. My life is worth more than a few bucks of savings. My family is worth a LOT more than that.

I second this. I’ve had very good luck with the Federal Punch in 124 gr, and find it to be just as accurate as the HST.

GDHP’s in 50rd boxes have always been one of the more reasonably priced yet high performing rounds. For that reason, I stock up on them.

I haven’t looked lately but before the latest panic, 50rd boxes sold for $0-3 more than the 20rd box. Those 20rd boxes are a joke from a cost perspective.

I have not come across any GDHP in my area recently, you did good stocking up.

Yes, this is what I've always gotten in the past. Kind of hard to find right now.

I'd like to get a case of something and not grimace too terribly bad. I think I was paying about $25+S /50rds of GDHP before I went OCONUS a few years ago.

I saw some Sig white box jhp that was $22 for 50. I haven't tried it but it didn't look super impressive, cheap though.

Check out blue collar reloading in Salisbury. They usually have a decent selection of ammo also.

I personally do not think that +P is necessary in 9mm anymore. The bullet tech has gotten so much better that the top choices will all function well with standard pressure.

There's some Gold Dot for sale in the classifieds:

I would do this. If you know that Gold Dots feed in your guns of choice I would stick with them.

I use Winchester White Box 115 grain jhp's. Back before the craziness, they were very affordable. I haven't seen any for 2 years now, but then I haven't really been looking, since I have enough for the time being.

I've got quite a stock of HST and RA9T. I loaded up in 2014 when I first got a carry permit, so I'll probably never need to buy more.
Let's say I do manage to shoot all of it. Then I'll load up the Lehigh defenders I bought a pile of.

I personally almost never shoot my carry ammo. I empty the carry guns about once a year and reload. I have enough to last my lifetime. If I needed to I could load my own.

Same. I initially bought a lot so I could rotate it out. Carry in Illinois requires a lot of loading and unloading (at least it did initially). I was new to carry so I got all wrapped around the axle about setback from repeated chambering.. experience solved that misconception.

Yeah really unless you exposed it to a lot of moisture or rechamber it all the time ammo in the mag is good to go for a long time. IMHO I reload rounds that mimic my carry ammo and that is good enough for practice. As long as I know the good stuff feeds I don't need to shoot it often. If the SHTF in an EOTWAWKI scenario I am going be be shooting ball ammo in my short lived blaze of glory.

Yup…ball been droppin’fools for decades. I’d rather have the fancy stuff, but I wouldn’t scoff at ball when the chips are down.

Norma 108grain MHP had extremely good terminal performance when we tested it at the B&M Ballistics Lab this Feb. It can be now found for $26-$30 a box. We shot it out of an AR-9 and a Sig P938.

$23.99

I just bought a box of these with the .38spl that just came back into stock.

No idea how it shoots, but I'm pretty sure it's gonna really rip from an 16" barrel. Box says 1730 FPS from I'm guessing is an 8" barrel...pretty sure they test all pistol rounds with 8".

I carry the Sig V-Crown 124. I have a bunch stock piled, so I can practice with it when I rotate the mags. I used to carry the HSP, and Federal before that. The HSP had feeding inconsistencies, so I moved away from that round. The Sig is reasonably priced, and readily available, so I don't mind shooting it once or twice a month.

Great find!! The terminal performance of this ammo was among the very best during testing at the B&M lab.

That pricing makes this 9mm round a pretty solid choice for the money.

"Generally" the test barrel length is listed on the box.

I know, but I don't have the box yet. I do have a box of .38 {get's up and checks it} and I guess it's a 6" and my eyes aren't what they were 30 years ago.20220413_144517.jpg

I could have sworn that said 8 not 6, but it's pretty small.
