Best reasonably priced 9mm SD round

I’m going to put a recommendation out for Punch. It’s an “okay” price from Federal but extremely reasonable when found in the wild.

I have an old Colt that’s eaten several hundred rounds of the stuff. That gun is a 4”+ gun at 25 with everything I have run through it—135gr Critical Duty, 115gr Critical Defense, 124gr and 147gr Gold Dots, S&B and IMI JHPs…

It turns into a 2.5-3” gun with the 124gr Punch. It reminds me of an even cheaper version of the XTP with a less-tough bullet. It just groups well in everything I have put it through.

Great find!! The terminal performance of this ammo was among the very best during testing at the B&M lab.

That pricing makes this 9mm round a pretty solid choice for the money.

I like to re convince myself 2 or 3 times a year that my SD combination of choice runs perfectly. Probably not necessary but personal preference.

I carry the Sig V-Crown 124. I have a bunch stock piled, so I can practice with it when I rotate the mags. I used to carry the HSP, and Federal before that. The HSP had feeding inconsistencies, so I moved away from that round. The Sig is reasonably priced, and readily available, so I don't mind shooting it once or twice a month.

Sometimes you can find the Sierra loading of this same bullet for slightly less $ if you troll around the normal suspects.

We have sold some of that at the store I work at, and it even comes in sig marked brass!

Indeed. Those are the ones.

All of the ones I've examined used sig headstamps, and its Sierra that makes the V crown projos for Sig....

It would be potentially interesting to see some ballestics comparisons between the Sig and Sierra loads.

I'd bet they are the same.

Penetration- It penetrated 7.5" into the medium. More than any other factory ammo tested. This is probably due to the relatively high velocity.

Expansion- The projectiles expanded more than any other factory ammo tested. It also retained most if not all of its weight.

It performed equally well in both test platforms. The AR 9 carbine and the Sig P938.
