What’s the best movie, supposedly based on a book, that just doesn’t jive with the book at all?

I’ll watch Starship Troopers everytime it’s on. But, the only resemblance it has to the book is bugs.

Awesome book, full of philosophy and action, would have made a heck of a movie.

I don’t read many books anymore, but The Shining was nowhere close.

Peter Jackson utterly ruined The Hobbit. >:[ So many deviations from the book in the name of a popular cash grab to draw in fans who'd never actually read the book that it actually made me mad. Legolas!? Why is Legolas in The Hobbit!? What an absolute train wreck. It started off right, then just took a spectacularly bad nosedive the moment they set off on their adventure. The *only* reason I didn't walk out of the theater halfway through the first movie was because I didn't want to embarrass the friend I went with.

Ironically the movie had an entirely different message from the book but was still great!

Dune 1984. It's absolutely terrible but still a must watch.

Obscure one perhaps.....

Phantoms.

Dean Koontz book from the 80s. Terrifying read as a teenager.

The movie was nowhere close to the book, but it's difficult to cover all the twists and turns in a story like that in an hour and a half. Overall a decent movie that I watch on occasion.

Verhoeven would have had to actually read the book to adapt it, but he had a temper tantrum over "Nazis" and pulled something out his arse.

The Grey Man. Nothing like the Gentry character but entertaining.

American Assassin. Turned Mitch Rapp from prodigy spy to an angry punk who was out of control and couldn't even surveil a terrorist from across a crowded street without sending stink eye vibes that were picked up.

Edit. I read the title wrong. A. A. was a great book but terrible movie.

Yes! The movie of course is a classic and an excellent movie. I didn't read the book until years after I had first seen the movie. The movie leaves Brody's wife's affair with Hooper out entirely and In the book Hooper dies instead of Quint.

I am glad I saw the movie first. I think i would not have liked the movie had I read the book beforehand.
