So a guy I work with had two vehicles from his uncles estate he was looking to sell. A 2004 extended cab 4x4 ranger, and a 2010 XLT explorer 4x4. They’re both pretty nasty. Which helped me get them at a steal I feel like. In fact I’m going to do before and after videos and post them on YouTube of the ranger. Pretty sure it has gremlins living in it. Nastiest drivable vehicle I’ve ever seen. I got the explorer 2 fridays ago. Since then I’ve put a new belt on it, plugs, changed the oil, air filter. It had a terrible roar in the front end. Since the weather was nice today I got off early and came home to try and remedy the noise. I replaced front bearing hubs, rotors and brakes. Drives like a new car. No vibration, no roar. I might keep it. I’m getting the truck tomorrow after work I think. Gonna make him drive it over so I don’t have to drive it. Gonna do a complete interior detail including replacing the carpet. The explorer we cleaned the carpet in Saturday and wiped it down some. I’ve bought a detailing steamer as well. I might have to go in the detailing business to help pay for all these parts. Back brakes this weekend for the explorer, and new brakes all the way around on the ranger once I get the interior drivable again. Here’s one of the plugs that came out of the explorer. It’s gotta get better gas mileage now

New front end this afternoon, including bearing hubs, rotors and pads.

I know I don’t need drilled and slotted rotors, but from Detroit axle they’re actually cheaper than the local parts places. I’ve had good luck with powerstop brand brakes also being about half the price of local stores.

More pics to come

keeping the ranger?

Look forward to seeing the before pics and then the transition
I’m not sure yet. I need a truck and it’ll sorta fill the role for a bit, but I want a bigger truck. Couldn’t pass them up at the price. I looked at them last summer and he told me what he wanted for them and I was like “ouch”

Fast forward to a month ago and he’s like you can get them for this price if you still want them. And it was about 4k cheaper than his first price. He was ready to get rid of them. Glad I exercised some patience

You’ll make crazy money on them. It’s stupid how much a used vehicle is bringing. Sold one today and doubled my money. Had 82 Facebook Marketplace messages in 30 minutes to come look. Was gone from the driveway in less than an hour after the posting. Three guys said I gave it away and one guy said hold it until the afternoon and he would give me $400 more than listing. Sold to first guy who came. Two guys had times set up to come look and came hours earlier before I could text it sold. One guy just wanted it for the engine and bumper.

If you're going complete detail on the ranger, when you pull the carpet take it to the self car wash and hang it on the floor mat holders on the wall and put $5 in it. You will be surprised and just let it dry for a few days.

Tell me about the steam cleaner.
Haven’t used it yet, but I saw it on YouTube and it looks like it worked great.

McCulloch MC1375 Canister Steam Cleaner with 20 Accessories, Extra-Long Power Cord, Chemical-Free Cleaning for Most Floors, Counters, Appliances, Windows, Autos, and More, 1-(Pack), Black https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00G00BT7...t_i_18EB2FZDP8GFDJVY2Q5X?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

Here’s a video. I probably won’t use it as much as this guy, but I don’t think it’ll take long to pay for itself with the mess I have to clean up

I bought some detail cleaner online with a drill brush attachment. It lifted stains I didn’t think would come out. It did take a bit of blotting with a damp clean cloth. I will say it is hard on fibers though. I wouldn’t use that technique with the drill brush on a high end car unless it’s a last resort. I made the vehicle I sold yesterday look extremely nice inside.

I bought my 2000 Ranger just over a year ago. I got it as a second vehicle but it has become our primary vehicle. We hardly ever drive the CR-V anymore. Just about every time I drive the Ranger, someone asks if I want to sell it. I could make some money on it but I'd have to find something else. I have a plan to where I may sell it later and drive something else as a second vehicle.

Ranger came home today. Anyone ever seen a BFT edition? Has some stick on cowls and the letters BFT on the bed side and on the seats. I’m assuming it means Built Ford Tough. Never seen another like it. May have been just a dealership thing. Pics don’t show the mildew on everything inside. Driving it home gave me the creeps

Only special edition I know of from those years was the Edge. I suppose it could have been a dealer specific thing... or like the Z69 stickers my buddy had on his Silverado LOL.

Doesn’t look THAT bad.

That’s what Diana’s daughter said. She won’t get in it though. Dash and all the plastic is covered in mold or mildew or something yucky and a large amount of dog hair. I was scared turning the ac on in its current state would give me Covid

Carpet I got to go back in it is a little darker. I think it’ll look better. Gonna wash the outside Saturday morning with purple power, then remove the seats, trim and hopefully the carpet. Has two brand new Michelins on the front. Two new Dunlop tires in the bed that had been stored in the old man’s building. Gonna sell the dunlops and buy two more Michelins

I’d love something like that Ranger as a project to turn into trash truck. We’re keeping our eyes open for something similar locally. I can almost smell the interior from looking at your pics. Lol.

I ended up with a Dodge that was that nasty.

I took it to the car wash, opened all 4 doors, sprayed Simple Green everywhere, and went to work with the high pressure wand. Seats, carpet, headliner, dash, everywhere. It didn't look like the same truck afterward.

The body looks straight on that side, it should clean up pretty good.

It’s got a couple small dings in the body. Once I get it cleaned up I may try to remove them, I may not. Guess it depends on if the paint falls off when I wash it.

Ha! I did the same to a '80 Chevy Caprice company car I inherited from a manager who was a smoker, closet eater, drinker.
Opened all 4 doors and trunk, pulled every plug I could find, two of each cleaner and Frabreaze, rinse and repeat. Left everything open for two summer days.
Even my wife with the "nose" was ok with it.

Drove that into the ground with over 200k on the clock.

Let me know how you like that steamer Brian, I could use one around the house/shop.
Best thing I’ve bought so far to help clean these vehicles up.

Brian, look into using an ozone generator if it has any smells, it should eliminate any in the a/c ductwork as well if you run it on recirculate.
Bought one of these also. Ran it fit half an hour with the truck running also today.

This truck is cleaning up nicely. I use a peppermint based enzyme cleaner on occasion. Used it today. Took seats out, removed all plastic except the dash, removed carpet to replace. Sprayed all the trim pieces with my cleaner and @Lil D and my brother steamed them and wiped them down afterwards while I was working on the interior. I then wiped all the plastic down with mequiars protectant and all the plastic looks brand new. This is one of the most satisfying projects I’ve taken on. Gonna try to get the seats shampooed tomorrow and get the new carpet in. Here’s a few before and after of the dash and door panel

Before, years of dust, and mildew

After. Steamer lifts that stuff right out

The ex wife had an 86 full size bronco that she got from her mom. The driver seat had 20 years of sweat and grime baked into it from the AZ sun. The fabric was crunchy. I pulled the seat, hosed it down, sprayed it with degreaser, let it bake in the sun for an hour, then hit it with a low pressure nozzle from the pressure washer. The black grime flowed out of the seat. It would have been a huge improvement after one washing but I repeated the process 4-5 times followed by a final very thorough rinse and two days drying in the sun. It would have only looked better if I'd have replaced it. No more smell and the fabric was soft again, almost looked new.

Crawled around in the floor this evening pushing, pulling and trying to get the new carpet trimmed out. Starting to come back together, on the inside anyway. Outside is still a train wreck

Weird.. I don’t see any sheet metal to be cut there.. 😆

Use your steamer to help shape it.
Those are everydamnthing snips
