Broke off a plastic jag in a brass cleaning rod. I should have known better than to even bother trying to use the plastic jag that came with the rod.

Any ideas on getting the broken off threaded plastic out of the threaded rod so I can salvage the rod? Drill most of it out, then use a screw to scrape the threads clean?

Or just a hot screwdriver or small Allen wrench.

Use a regular (flat bladed) jeweler's screwdriver, sized to fit the threaded hole as closely as possible.

Carefully carve a slot into the broken plastic part, insert the screwdriver, and back it out.

Avoid using heat to melt the slot into the plastic, if possible, because this MAY make it more difficult to unscrew the broken part out as the melted plastic MAY more tightly adhere to the brass threads. If you do want to try this, experiment with the other broken piece first, heating the tip of the screwdriver and judging just how hot you need it to be to do the job. Heat the tip, press it into the plastic, and hold while the plastic re-hardens.

If this doesn't work, mark a centering "punch" hole in the broken plastic part using the hot tip of a sharp needle, punch, etc. Then use a tiny drill bit to drill the center of the plastic part out without damaging the brass threads. Then work the remaining plastic remnant out by suitable mechanical means...jeweler's screwdriver, needle, etc.

I wouldn't try to melt it out unless you had a tap to chase the threads.
Go the melt a small allen wrench into the end of it and unscrew it after it cools.

Take another rod that is smaller diameter and hammer it in to the first rod to push the plastic jag back deeper in to the hollow rod. When the 2nd rod gets stuck inside the first rod, realize this was a mistake and buy 2 new rods.

Seriously though, did you try pushing something in to the plastic to be able to spin it back out?

Buy new rod from Amazon: when new rod arrives take out and place it on the table in clear sight of the old rod and jag. Melt old jag with a lighter, break old rod in half and throw it away. The new rod won't give you any problems after that.

Seriously, though I have actually been in this situation and wish I would have just bought a new one to start with. Wasted hours trying to get it out, a reverse drill bit is what finally got it out, but it messed up the threads so any rod or brush would only screw down half way after that. I finally bought a new one after that. But your luck may be different than mine.

Thanks for the suggestions. I heated up a precision flathead screwdriver, pushed it into the plastic, let it cool, and spun it out. Easy as pie, and threads are fine.

walmart sells brass jags ya know.
Sure, *now* you tell me.

I normally don't use jags as I have an Otis kit with cables, so I use those slotted bits that you attach patches too. Got a brass cleaning rod recently and it came with that cheap plastic jag.

1. Throw it away
Buy a new rod, it's not like their 100.00 a foot....
