Today, I got a call from a local car dealer asking for some help. I drove a car to the auto sale at Houston. Actually, we took 3 pickups and 1 SUV. I drove a 2019 Ford Flex for everyone to come back home.

It's rained all day here but the trip was uneventful. We dropped the vehicles off and one of the other drivers wanted to drive back. I was riding shotgun. There was an accident on I-10 so we took Hwy 90. Somewhere along Hwy 90 there was a sound like a bomb went off. Something flew off of a truck and hit the windshield. Glass flew everywhere, all in my lap and went as far as the rearmost seat.

I have never seen a windshield break all the way through to the inside. Whatever hit the windshield nearly came inside.

Glad no injuries. Perhaps a tire blew and fragmented.

7/11 slushee?? Mythbusters did a thing where at 55/60 MPH...a slushee will go thru your windshield

Wow, bet that caused some drawer- changing!

Had something similar happen several years ago in GA, tooling down 400 and a PVC elbow/tee fell off of a trailer at 60ish mph. Hit the right passenger side windshield and blew glass all over the inside of the work truck.

Glad you didn't get hurt.

We water ballooned a friend’s window at about 60 MPH from a truck bed in front of him. Great plan, complete with vaseline on his wipers. Well good thing I got a little smarter after age 17 because we shattered the crap out of his window. Luckily he was unharmed and it was a cheap learning experience.

Angle of the windshield, the Flex’s more upright one, can cause a hit to be more damaging than a more laid back angle like on cars where it deflects more then penetrates.
 
Glad noone was hurt! I've read news reports of people being killed by road debris coming through the windshield.

Saw the aftermath of a ptarmingan, like some sort of penetrating delayed detonating biological warhead, small hole in the glass and no blood til it exploded on the B pillar.

Snowy Owl was more damage less mess.

Was Les Nessman nearby?

Several years ago, my daughter was driving south down I-77 when a tire and wheel fell off a northbound truck. She saw it come over the concrete median and start bouncing toward her car. There was nowhere to go. The tire stuck right at the top center of her windshield crushing the windshield and top edge of the roof. But, the tire didn't get through.
 
When I was about 10 my mom was driving us on US421 around bonlee and there were some guys doing the yearly highway mowing in that stretch. They threw a 3” diameter sapling right in front of her car. It split and crashed into the windshield right in front of me. Luckily it hit broadside and not like a spear and caught the top of the windshield frame. I had several cuts from the broken glass but no other injuries in the car.
 
Welcome to TX. Both of my vehicles had their windshields cracked at some point while living there. Not quite that bad, but still. Glad you weren’t injured.

True. Happened to me. I was headed to work, not far out of my driveway, maybe going 45 in my 99 Cherokee. A full grown turkey lurking on the shoulder decided to take flight and hit squarely in the middle of my windshield. The whole thing shattered - glass everywhere - in my lap, in my coffee mug...

And to save you all some time - because every time I tell this story I get the same question - no, I didn’t recover the turkey and eat it. From what I could tell, she kept going, though maybe tenderized a bit.
 
On my way to work in the morning rush, a rear bumper from a small car in the road of I-540 here in Raleigh, one car hit it, it got kicked up and an 18 wheeler hit it head on, it then was going to hit my car, no where to go with traffic, can't stop but I could speed up, I ended up hitting it with the roof of my car, otherwise would have went into my windshield. The photos below are not my car but shows a bumper of similar size impacting the front windshield. edit: truck tire thread.

I think that's a gator (tractor trailer tire tread)

my story:

flock of pigeons.
multiple windshields.
looked like snowing feathers.

the flock had roosted under an overpass bridge crossing I-40E.
i was heading to work in Wilmington around 6AM when they "flushed".
of course, they first flew DOWN into +70 MPH traffic covering all lanes.
thankfully, i was one of the first to pass underneath them without damage.
i watched the rest through my mirrors. *HP operator was skeptical at best.

I had a bird hit the B-pillar in an old Vista cruiser with my oldest daughter in the back seat when she was about 5-6. It exploded all across the headliner & her. I pulled over to clean her up from the gore and she had 1/2 a beak stuck in her cheek.

Thankfully no injuries. The only time I have seen the windshield penetrated was by a complete wheel and tire from a truck going the other way on I-94 in Milwaukee. Peeled the roof back to the 3rd seat of a Pontiac station wagon killing 4'people in 1990. Horrible to watch! They blamed corrosion on the wheel studs from road salt.

Thank God nobody got killed.
