Browning 1911?

Hey guys.. My neighbor, an older gent, came over today and was asking me about a Browning 1911 45.
I've never paid'em too much attention and don't know much of anything about'em.
Checked the PSA site and Bud's. Plenty of 380s and 22s. No 45s
So Browning doesn't make a 1911 in 45?
Figgered I'd check with y'all ta see if I'm missing somethin. Don't wanna give him bad info. Thanks..

Ok. So bit of history off the top of my head. Somebody correct my mistakes.

John Browning designed the Colt 1911. He wanted what was eventually the browning high power. But the army wanted it in 45. They also wanted extra safeties. Or an extra safety.

So he altered the design to fulfill the military contract.

If memory serves he never put the high power into production either. His apprentice did after his death.

So there is no browning 1911. There is a colt 1911 designed by JMB.

And the browning high power is a 9mm.

I don’t know of any 1911 in 45 that is stamped as a browning manufactured item.

FWIW he was asking specifically about a Browning 1911 like he had "way back in the military". Sounds kinda Colt to me.
And he's a Browning guy thru-n-thru.. Did they used to make them a long time ago?

Maybe the old gent did not mean a 1911 sold by the Browning Arms Company but a 1911 designed by John M. Browning and now produced and sold by many different companies.

As Chad posted above, Browning never made a 45 ACP 1911.

Leave it to Billy to remember a 1911. Browning offered a couple different 100th Anniversary packages. The first one I have actually seen were once (only 1 time ever) what Billy mentions a case with a shrunk down Browning 1911 in .22lr AND a full size 1911 in .45acp … both had gold inlay and engraving referencing 1911-2011 … and a hefty price tag like $5K if I remember correctly. The other, I’ve seen quite a few of these, was a case with the shrunk down .22lr version and a Bowie knife.

Now the $64 question … I am pretty sure Browning did not actually make those .45acp versions (tool up for such a limited run?) they probably contracted them out … wonder who made ‘em for Browning IF I’m correct?

Browning doesn’t make any guns. They contract manufacturing of all of them out.

Talked to him again yesterday afternoon but they were cooking out and expecting company so I didn't wanna linger.
Mighta been hesitant to talk about it in front of his wife but he doesn't strike as that kindof guy.
I'll see if he comes back with more questions and in the meantime thanks for y'all's help..

It might be one of these. People often referred to them as Browning Colt 1911s.

The 100 year Commemorative Set looked like this. They were versions of the 100 Year Colt.
