called 911, some douche shooting near the house.

I think the differentiating issue here is strangers. I think just about all my neighbors shoot and it generally doesn't bother us, except for one that has a habit of shooting after dark. The sometimes have a blasting session 9 or 10 at night. That is a little annoying. There's no public land around here. It all belongs to someone. I don't mind if my neighbors shoot, but if a stranger comes shooting, they're on someone else's land. And everyone would have an issue with that.

So for me and my hood, we all agree that shooting is 100% fine. The snap of a bullet is not.

Thats how we roll.

I heard that noise once. Took a few seconds to figure out what it was. Was planning on confronting the offenders, but I was outnumbered by a good margin and decided to get the heck out of there. Likely won’t forget that sound.

Your own mag dump into the ground, immediately in response, might scare the chit out of 'em... jus' sayin'.
I was told not to shoot into the ground, because there might be rocks and I might have a bad result. People here told me that.

Before the Wagram range was re-oriented, some cousins heard a bullet going thru the trees while they were on their porch. As a combat vet, Jay knew what it was. The range was fixed, but I thought about that when I heard the shooting so near the houses.

That is kinda like my experience. I was out fishing behind an island on the CA Delta. I heard the noise close by and then one round hit a tree a few feet from me and the reality sunk in. I hauled ass out of there in my boat to buzz around the island and go confront what I assumed was some asshat hunter or kid and I see a handful of cars parked on a levee with a decent amount of what appeared to be tourists from below the Rio Grande all firing into the woods of the Island. They had no clue I was back there. I decided it probably wasn’t going to end well if I started cussing a them so I went 60 mph the other way. I was so proud I didn’t piss myself at least.

A mag dump in the front yard, safely, would be an indicator that maybe they need to shoot somewhere else.
I've done that multiple times over the years, after yelling who are you, do you have a backstop. If I'm ignored, I'd empty the thunder stick, a few years ago I used a bumpy stock.
The shooting stopped every single time.

THIS!

I've been shot at before in a deer stand on a power line. The shot originated across the river some 1000 yards down range. The first sound I recall was a crack, followed by a pop well off in the distance. A second buzz/hiss was immediately followed by another pop. I surmised that the shooter may have not intended for the rounds to go that far down range (likely sighting in a target with an insufficient back stop) but I didn't want to remain in the stand and win the lottery on a stray round.

Shooting is OK here in Johnston County, as long as it's in unincorporated areas as most municipalities forbid shooting within town limits. The issue becomes, as in most places, there are subdivisions everywhere in the 'burbs that makes it a dicey proposition to just pull up somewhere and start shooting. There was someone having a good time this weekend not far from me, perhaps a mile or so, and it sounded like at times they had a bump stock. Lots of money going down the tube at a time. There are no public ranges in Johnston County  so shooters have to improvise or travel. Guns are noisy, there's no getting around it. If the ordinance says no shooting within 200' of a structure, guess what, it's going to be noisy. Noisy doesn't mean unsafe, it just means, noisy.

A cylinder's worth through a ported .44 Mag will definitely get folks' attention. Imagine a mag's worth of .45-70 would work as well 😎

Once is enuff. You will never forget it.

Never been shot at, whether in anger or error, but I spent a bunch of time in the pit pulling targets as a young PFC on the Battalion rifle team & know that sound well.

First couple times you hear artillery going over head is fun.

Weird how you hear the bullet and before you can think "what was that" you hear the shot.

From what you said, thar's nowhere else to send a mag dump... if'n yer worried about what's under the ground, fill a 5 gal bucket with sand and choot that.

I'll just go to the range or cousin's land to shoot....

But the point is to make a similar, nearby, terrifying noise, so that the idiots will think twice about doing it themselves.
I completely get the point, but I don't want to freak the neighbors out. I'm related to them!
If the idiot returns, I may rethink it, however.

BTDT, "crack", "crack", "crack"... "thump", "thump", "thump"...

Mag dumps? Aren't you guys paying attention? TWO blast of the shotgun out your back door.

If your neighbors are not freaked out by all that shootin' goin' on... why are you?
I don't know if they were freaked out or not, man. I didn't go around and do interviews while shooting was going on so close to the house!
I was afraid something was going to come whipping thru the house, or thru my HEAD, so I didn't do a census. I have NO idea who was shooting, or where the gun was pointing.
Did you actually READ my post?
Dang!!

A thought that may have a peaceful result; find a tape of an emergency vehicle that starts from afar and increases in sound as it gets nearer, run the sound through a loud speaker in the direction of the shooting and see if the shooting stops. If not, you have awakened the neighbors to assist you if further action is needed, that is after you’ve called 911, of course. Always remember never counter someone’s bad actions with your own such as returning fire in their direction, good luck.

I left my tannerite at B. Oaks....but I like the way you think!!
I was at the academy over in apex the other day, they had like a 100pk of 1/4 lb charges for just over $100. took a lot of will power not to heat seal them and line my property...

IT'S A JOKE

Had that happen once when I was a kid. Bullets were cracking and popping in the trees all around my dad’s house. I told him I was going to investigate. I knew the lay of the land better than he, I spent every day of my life out there.
There was a farm behind us that rented out to the city dwellers for a place to hunt. When I crested the hill just short of the offenders position, I saw them loading their guns in the trunk of a black car with NY plates. I walked up to them and asked if they’d seen anyone shooting, they said no. I then asked if they did see someone could they tell them to stop because the bullets are popping around our house over that hill.
They looked at me like I was crazy standing there with a single barrel 10 gauge with a pocket full of buckshot. Crazy for a 15 year old both in actions and choice of weapon but I didn’t know any better. I was very familiar with that gun and how to run it quickly had the need appeared.
They got in the car and left.
