I've been throwing around the idea of building an AR using an 80 lower. My question is, what makes it better/ different than just buying a 2nd hand, already owned AR? The used one isn't registered to you, so why would you want the other? This may have already been addressed in another post but I've looked til my eyes crossed.

Some people want zero paperwork. Whether is “registered” or not, they don’t even want the transfer forms sitting at a gun store somewhere.

That, and we are gun people. We will always look for ways to mess with guns. Some people get a real kick out of drilling them out themselves and saying “I made this.”

So, those are the two main reasons...no paperwork anywhere at all (even not in your name) and you made it yourself.

Some people also claim, since much of the federal gun control legislation is supposedly legitimized by the bit about regulating interstate commerce, that firearms made in your resident state should not be subject to federal control. I do not know if that has been run through the courts yet, but it is a twig that may bear fruit. I think the main attraction is having a firearm with no birth certificate. Private sales at this time would accomplish about the same thing.
