Yesterday, I had picked up a Canik TP9 Elite SC at my local shop, purely by happenstance. I had gone there to look at and handle a Walther CCP they had listed on their Gunbroker page, and needless to say, I did not come home with the Walther. While myself and the sales guy were looking at the pistol, the mag release broke. He took it into the back and was gone awhile and when he came back, he said the CCP was terminal. This was not an easy fix. I asked him if he had anything else in the same range, and he brought out a complete Canik kit (pistol, 2 mags, holster, accessories, etc. ) Just the day before, a buddy of mine had told me about his Canik experience, so I figured what the hell.
Got it out to the range today between rain showers and put about 100 rounds through it. Wind was not my friend today, so the target was all over the place, but I managed to get more than a few good groupings.
PROS- The pistol just shoots. It shoots fast. It shoots slow. It shoots hollow points. It shoots 115 grain range ammo like its craving it and hasn't eaten in days. I couldn't fill mags fast enough. This pistol just works. Sights are a blacked out U shaped rear and a glow in the dark (not night sight) front sight. Shots go where you want them. I was stacking rounds on top of each other in just a couple of mags. Interchangeable backstops (2) made it simple for me to fit the gun to my hand. Ambidextrous slide stop/release was easy to engage on the move without looking. Mag release was right where it should be and I was able to drop a mag and put another one in quickly and efficiently. Over all, it's a decent shooter. I'm no stranger to Turkish pistols, having owned a Stoeger before I got all snobby and joint the Sig cult.
CONS- There are only a few noteworthy issues with the pistol. It's small, so expect it to be a little snappy. This brings up the other issue. I found that if I did not grip the pistol a certain way, I'd get hit in the thumb knuckle with the beavertail portion of the backstrap. That's not a deal breaker, as I was able to figure out how *I* should hold the pistol for comfort and accuracy. The pistol comes with 2 magazines- a 12 round and a 15 round. The 12 rounder has an optional pinky rest baseplate that, while intended to give the shooter a little more purchase, I found that with my hand size (which is an average-medium size), I found my pinky under more than on. Anyone with large hands may find this an issue.
On a scale from 1 to 10, I would rate this a solid 7.5 or 8. I would not hesitate to carry the pistol.
A few other notes- the pistol is optics ready. I doubt I'd put an optic on the pistol since it only seems to be compatible with one or two optics. The holster that comes with the pistol is not great. I have found that the pistol fits in a few holsters I already have, so it's not a big issue.
Online reviews say you get a lot more gun than you'd expect at this price point, and I am inclined to agree.
