Carry concealed renewal

One month today since I submitted my renewal and still not assigned to a processor. :(

I submitted my renewal to Harnett county this past Monday. She said it would take 90 days. They have been quicker in the past.Could be all the growth around here but we shall see. Won't affect me either way.

I don’t think it’s an issue. I think I checked my wife’s a week before she got it in the mail, and it still didn’t show assigned to a processor. I never actually saw it in an assigned status. (This was within the last month, so a recent experience)

Seems it’s a lot like the NFA process. It just sits there waiting, and then the day it’s picked up it gets approved or denied.

Submitted my paperwork for renewal the first week of January. Just received a phone call from sheriff Richie Simmons himself to let me know my renewal was approved and ready. He also said that he wanted to personally call and thank me for taking the time to get my Conceal Carry and keeping it up-to-date.

Got my notice of renewal. Went on line to fill out the forms. Clearly states that I must have an original certificate for concealed carry course. Only problem with that is, I had to provide that original certificate to get my permit in the first place.
I live in Johnston county, do the other counties do this as well?
I'm in the same boat! What if you no longer have it? That part of the application seemed like a default question, as if it was the first time applying.

Johnston does not require a certificate for renewal. Go back and read again, we both made the same mistake. Also, when I dropped off my paperwork, I was told they didn't need a copy of your DD-214 for a renewal. The nice lady said, "We already got that."

Cool - my only hangup right now is that I have temp DL as I moved to a new address.

I went to my renewal appointment at the sheriff's department on Jan 8th. Just got a call that my permit will be ready to pick up tomorrow. Not bad, 21 days for renewal with the Cabarrus Co. Sheriff's office and I didn't even put my SSN on the form like they wanted me to. My old one doesn't expire until 3-23-24.

Now you're just rubbing it in the face of us poor souls that live in Mecklenburgistan! ;)

I just picked it up and it shows an expiration date of 3-22-29. I wasn't even going to go into their website and look at the status until the old one expired, 3-23-24. So I currently have 2 valid CHP's. It's also like a plastic credit card now and fits in the wallet a lot better.

I asked the deputy if they had plans to mail them, vs. having to pick them up in person and he said he figured they would go away before I had to renew again with Constitutional carry getting passed.

Since I live so close to the SC border, I cross over to & from work. While I patiently (meck county) wait for my chp to be renewed is it legal to carry across state lines?

I may be incorrect...

Other states say they reciprocate 'a valid permit'. Once expired it's not valid anymore. But...
NC has the law that states 'while renewal is in progress you can still carry'. This is only NC law so other states do not follow.

So, no, it's verboten!
(was a surprise to me)

I tended to agree with you…but a member of this site that’s a lawyer says otherwise.

The permit is still legal for carry (not purchase) as long as you submit before the expiration. Therefore it’s still a valid permit.

(Not being able to purchase with it has nothing to do with it being valid or not)

With the caveat that an officer from out of state may not have the resources available to him on the roadside to validate your permit with an expired date printed on it is technically valid due to renewal submission. Tread Carefully.

And I double-checked, and the law actually uses the word valid in this scenario.

In Nash County I had to redo mine (course and all) b/c I let it lapse for about a year or so. It was lightning fast (2 weeks faster than they said it would be) and then, someone screwed up my PO Box address, so after mailing it and having it returned, A SHERIFF DEPUTY PERSONALLY DELIVERED IT TO ME AT THE HOUSE.

It is a free county, for sure. The sheriff here is AWESOME.

My advice? Move.

Just got a phone call from meck sheriif, my renewal was approved. Roughly 45 days.
I submitted mine on 12/26/2023 and nothing yet, and it still shows that it's not been assigned to a processor yet.

That's crazy, hopefully the message I got is legit because I just realized they said I would also receive an email and that didn't happened smh!

Meck county just changed all their online stuff to now requiring you to come back in person 🤬. Started my application 3 days ago but effective today they now changed it. Literally missed the upload by a day as you have to go get documents notarized.

I think I'd rather take it in then upload it since you don't get a notification it's been received. At least when you hand it to them you know they got it especially when you hear somebody got a response at 45 days and yours if past 60 days already. ☹️

Are they at least going to mail it once it’s approved? Or is it back to the 2-trips process?

And will we still need to have things notarized or will they do that in office? I went during early covid and they handled it in office then.

Wow. I'm surprised. Pennsylvania is quick and easy compared to that. I figured you guys were much more free down south when it comes to firearms.

I’m not entirely sure as the email was not clear but planning to go in on Tuesday so will find out!

This is what bugs me the most is that I paid already now for two signatures so I could submit online and now I have to go in. UPS has upped their notary fee to $10 a signature now :( it’s not a ton of money but their email said if I received my packet already I can do it online so they didn’t have a good transition process.

That is a common misconception, even among people who have lived in the South their entire lives. Things are starting to change, but until very recently, upper New England, the southwest, the plains states, and the mountain west, and even Pennsylvania were all light years ahead of the South in terms of carry laws and gun laws in general.

I grew up in Virginia, which had great laws compared to basically the entire Eastern half of the US through the 2000s and 2010s.

Then I moved further south to Tennessee and was amazed to find that BOTH open and concealed carry of handguns were illegal without a permit, the permit required an in-person training class and invasive stuff like fingerprinting, open carry of long guns was completely illegal, criminal penalties attached to private businesses' "no gun" signs, etc.

Then I moved to NC, and was amazed to find a whole host of additional nonsense. "Duty to Inform", incredibly invasive medical privacy violations and fingerprinting as part of the CHP process, 0.0 BAC limit for carry, prohibition of carrying during a parade/protest, and a literal Jim Crow law saying you had to pay your sheriff for permission to purchase a pistol (WTF)...

The South is finally making some progress, but by no means is this region the primary driver of positive change in this country (with regard to gun laws). States like Kansas and New Hampshire have had us beaten for a long, long time.

Who ever you bank with might have a free notary service.

I thought of that when I submitted mine but I didn't want the people in the bank to know that I carry. It's bad enough they have all my financial information. There are young kids in my UPS store who could care less what they were notarizing when I went there.

Damn. It is hard to believe that Maryland, post Bruen was easier than Meck County.
No notarized anything. Did have send a copy of my DD214. That was needed for the training waiver. I laughed at that because I was USAF. Only handled a weapon twice in 4 years. 😁😆😅🤣

Honestly, getting my application approved in Illinois was easier than Mecklenburg. Entirely filed online with no prints. Took 120 to process.
I was shocked to learn about the PPP when I first got here, but that's resolved now fortunately.

I just got a automated call from the Meck Sheriff's office saying my renewal was approved and would be mailed to me. It took 68 days from submission to this call. Now let's see how long it takes for them to mail it to me. They also said I would received a confirmation email but nothing has arrived yet.

I’m a notary out in Midland. Just come see me for free. Maybe a bag of peanut butter M&Ms.
