My recently purchased 6” Python was returned to Colt first of April. I had decided to change out the front sight, and the 0.050” Allen-head plug screw froze midway out of its channel. Penetrating oil’s didn’t free it, so I drilled out the the plug screw. In doing so, I found the original tap had been done at an upward angle. The drill went through, but my mini easy-out would not budge the remains shell of the plug screw.
I called Colt, fully expecting to pay for a mill job or a cut-back barrel.
Today, Colt rep called and said they needed my FFL’s license. Why?
Because Colt decided to send me a new Python, with a new serial number🥳
Free of charge.
Much better than expected results are always nice.

Years ago I got WWI Carbonia Blue with a off center recoil tube in the frame. I did not notice it until I had transferred the gun into my ownership. I called Colt. Sent them pics and they issued me a call tag and picked up the gun. Once they got it they verified the defect and sent me a new one. They sent it directly to me because it was a warranty replacement. Many manufacturers have changed that policy even though it is perfectly legal. Good to hear Colt took care of it.

They said if the serial number changes, it has to go the FFL route. New gun has a new number. No biggie, my FFL is easy to deal with.

I know around the same time S&W replaced a 1911 in 9mm for me and said it had to go to and FFL. When I sited the law they reverted to its a company policy.

A licensee who receives a firearm for repair or customizing, and who returns a replacement firearm, must record the disposition in the licensee’s acquisition and disposition record. However, no ATF Form 4473 is required if the replacement firearm is returned to the same person from whom the licensee received the firearm being replaced. The replacement firearm must be of the same kind and type.

I had a mis-machined stripped AR lower replaced by PSA and it had go back through an FFL. Since it was another transfer, they sent me credit for the additional fee, after I sent them proof that FFL's charge transfer fees.

I've dealt with several gun manufacturer's customer service departments over the years (Colt, SW, Ruger, Para-Ordnance) and all were stellar except for Para-Ordnance. They were rude jerks and didn't fix the problem in the pistol and charged me for the work that didn't work.
