Parkland HS Article

"Because the gun was inside the backpack, the sound was muffled. The shot went through the bookbag and hit the ground.
The Forsyth County Sheriff's Office says a gun went off inside a teenage student's backpack. The shrapnel from the misfire hit the floor and fragments injured a female student. "

That makes me feel better that it was in a bag. Are there any holes in these comments? I certainly think a round going off in a pack would wake you up. Best they bring the metal detectors back!

I don't think it's the school. It's got to be more a matter of the neighborhood (hood) they're pulling kids from. There's got to be a corolation between the number of single moms and feral kids that end up in that place. If the parent(s) started getting the Crumbley treatment this crap would stop.
 
A 22 in a bookbag might be pretty quiet.
 
Parkland isn't what is was 40 years ago. Most of that south end of Winston was working class and decent. Lots of that area are filled with crime, drugs and low income housing. North Forsyth isn't much better.

When I graduated from West Forsyth in 1970, Parkland was a new school and had the best of everything.
My how times have changed.
 
Hmmm. 69 law enforcement visits to Parkland. Yeah, sounds like nothing has changed since my visits there. We know what the problem is, don’t we. I remember my first football game I attended there. Must have been a whole 200 Parkland fans. Damn school is a joke led by idiots. Nobody in there right mind would work there. And Thomasville High is not much better.

My wife graduated from Parkland in the early '80's and she said it was fine when she was there.

Same with my dad. He graduated from parkland in early 80s and it was a regular ol school then. One of my little sister's went there in the early 2000s when it really went to a straight gangsters paradise type school. I spent some of my childhood down around that area when I'd stay with my great grandparents in the late late 80s and it was still a pretty safe area. Now I avoid the south side and north side of Winston unless I just have to go.

Well the students are what make the school what it is
If the neighborhoods are rough, the school will be rough
And the reality is that without any sort of rules or consequences etc, the school will stay a craphole.
 
I used to do some regular maintenance work for a guys elderly mom who lived 2 roads over from parkland high school. She woke up from a nap one day and walked through her house to find 2 black youth's rummaging around. Lucky for her they ran back down the stairs to the basement window they had broke out to get in and they left. It could have been alot worse for the sweet old lady. I was there as quick as I got the call from her son. Put new window glass in and put bars on all the windows. Cops came while I was there and I overheard telling the lady and her son they caught the 2 kids and that they was students at parkland where they had skipped class. That was around 10 years ago.
 
Just have to wonder if Vlad Putin and the Russians would put up with this hoodlum nonsense or if the bad actors would have been sent to a labor gulag to never be heard from again. America has really created something unique and it reeks of elephant dung.

It has been reported that every school in Forsyth County has "metal detectors" but they are not turned on every day because of "the expense" of running them. The Sheriff advised that all metal detectors will be turned on every day.
 
Article I read mentioned the detectors were NOT on the day of the discharge. Kinda getting the implication that the young criminal knew the metal detectors weren't in use.
 
It's pretty sad the state the school(s) are in today. I don't think a change in faculty or admin would help the school that much. Kids are going to push boundaries and misbehave some, it's a given. Teachers & admin are hamstrung on discipline/incentives they can give at school, and clearly a good portion of the students attending Parkland aren't given any at home.

We should stop wasting good money after bad trying to educate the garbage that doesn’t want it. Don’t give them any (welfare) handouts either. A generation or two of abject poverty and living under a bridge would fix some attitudes right quick.

Big difference between “pushing boundaries and misbehaving” and with teens bringing guns, knives and drugs to school.
Expel the idiots, after they get arrested and treated like the scum that they will forever be.
Crumbley their welfare butts, while you deal with the little bums-to-be😡
 
Forsyth County has an open enrollment policy. If there is space at a school, and the principal approves you entering, you may change schools after applying during the application dates. If you have a record of problems there are a couple schools I highly doubt you would get approval.

This thread and the slapped teacher thread demonstrates why there are new charter schools popping up everywhere in NC. Last number I saw was 207 charter of the 2250 schools. There is a high number of privates as well. The good thing about Parkland is all the gangbangers like it there and stay out of the other schools like West Forsyth.

I agree it’s more of a people issue than electricity. What’s an unarmed little 130 pound teacher going to do when it beeps and there is a gun? Say go home?

I support a different theory. Any person that has any drugs in their system gets a one-way ticket to Portland Oregon and agrees to never return.

This is exactly right. “Good” kids can get into decent schools like the magnets and the rest just get pushed through. It’s shitty but the only thing the county can do is try to contain the spread.
 
Just one of the many effects of failing to hold people responsible and we are seeing it everywhere…not just in the schools.

Folks who applied for loans are forgiven debt they willingly took on. Politicians who use their position/information to expand their wealth or engage in child trafficking/pedophelia are not held criminally liable.

No accountability, at all, but…

Specific groups in the country ARE blamed and held responsible by both politicians and their propaganda arm (the media) for acts entirely beyond our control.

Any time there is a mass shooting, ALL firearms owners are to blame. The fault of practices which occurred nearly two centuries ago lies with folks who weren’t even alive during that time…unless you are a white liberal….then, you bear no responsibility for it.

It’s all part of the demonization of certain people/cultures in the US and holding them accountable for the ills of society. Give ya an hypothetical example, but you know it’s the truth…

The media rarely reports on the war zone the city of Chicago has become on any given weekend, but let that level of violence happen even just one time in Bozeman MT, Lincoln NE or somewhere similar and it would be all over the national news. Wonder why?

The narrative…that’s why.

The truth is out there…it’s not opinion or conjecture…it’s truth and truth based upon statistics reported by our own .gov agencies (FBI, Bureau of Labor, etc), but for some reason or another, it seems it is something to be avoided like the plague….intentionally, because it doesn’t fit the narrative of assigning blame.

Friend works at Lexington High - they (teachers) have to do duty on rotation to run the line - checking bags and wanding kids etc

Again, my biggest concern is, what happens when the kid with the gun decides today is the day? And the people at the school are teachers and educators. No doubt even with metal detectors the school is still permeable.

I think Winston’s biggest issues are definitely gang related. Crazy times we live in

My FIL graduated from West Forsyth in either 71 or 72.

How about the mother & father that are in jail for the killing their wacky kid did up north somewhere. Apply the same thing here. When the deposits stop and real jail time happens, things will change.

Fact is Parkland is 92.5% minority. Winston-Salem Carver is 97% minority. Both have enormous amounts of school LEO interaction. Both score miserably by national standards in reading, math, and science. You think Charlotte Catholic, Christ the King, or Davidson Day have police interaction. Doubtful if more than once a year.

Locally here the school system realized people utilized private school options more every year. They created another school and recruited high performing students from Catawba County to raise the scorecard for the school system. In doing so the 100 plus year old school went from 14th best to 298th and is now 44.5% white. School superintendents have created ways to make themselves look better. But the fact is one school is a top school while the previous only high school in the system is now a failing school.
