I’m wanting to set up a .22 rifle to mainly shoot for fun but could also compete with it. Any advice or recommendations? Not wanting a $$$$ set up but something fun. Ruger Precession? 10-22? CZ? Optics?

Don’t know a lot about the .22 comps but long distance accuracy is what I was
Some of the competitions have classes that limit the cost of the rifle. For example NRL22 Base class.
So, this factor may influence what you end up doing.

One 'angle' towards the journey you want to start would be to attend an Appleseed and then once you have attended one of those, move on to their Appleseed KD (known distance) event, which takes your skills from 25 yards and moves out to 200.

This angle gets you really 'set' in terms of equipment and skills to take all the possible next steps.

One good example of a next step in serious rimfire marksmanship is Mini Palma.
Essentially this mimics a 800, 900, and 1000 yard event.... really takes you to your personal best.

Here is a link to a club that holds .22 lr precision matches. Not sure if all clubs have the same match rules as these. But, it will give you a rough idea about some of the equipment.

Just came from the awards and pizza for that series. Was a fun year. Definitely try it if you are close.
I haven’t shot in it yet. Planning on shooting a few matches next year though.

I'm glad I went to today's awards & pizza day as well, hope to see the folks again in March.

Wondering what I will bring with me?
Maybe the sporter 10/22 setup I have? The CZ457? The Tippmann M4-22?

Meanwhile, here's a fun video to watch:

I was not impressed at all with my ruger precision I got rid of it and bought a bergara b14r steel barrel and am very pleased with it. I shoot it out to 400 yards when the wind lays out and it’s about as much fun as I’ve ever had with a gun.

Some kind of competition looks interesting and 22 is probably about all I could afford to do on a regular basis.

I still have to find a place to shoot that's not an hour plus drive

I was very happy to see that Max is starting NRL 22 at CGGR. Much closer for me. Hopefully the weather will cooperate. Thermals and a hand warmer may be needed.

don't forget to have some means to warm up the ammo, too ... I have sadly found rimfire does not like cold

foot / boot type iron-salt handwarmer packets, and/or rechargeable electric warmers seem to work best, in a small, insulated lunch type carrier
as long as the ammo is above 60F or so, all is well

Thanks to all who shared. Looking for a place to learn and test my shooting. cz457. no experience in thiz but thinking a trip to Haw River is in my future. anyone suggest someone to talk to? i luve in wake forest.
@FarpinDar and I think @JimP42 shoot in those matches regularly.

Next year, ifin I'm still on the right side of the grass...Ima put on a "Money" Turkey Shoot with rimfire Only weapons....Your choice of Platform...divided into Irons and Optics.....50 yards....standing on Ya hind legs shooting Only...... ONE SHOT!....25 yard pistol target....

The matches at DPRC are fun so just show up and shoot. If you are not on Practiscore then go and register so you can register for the matches.

@Average Joe Been a few years since I shot that match.

@Rolesvillerocker I'd be happy to meet you out at DPRC. We won't be able to shoot the actual match targets but there is plenty of steel on the rimfire range. Send me a PM if you're interested.

Time gets away from me sometimes. The Covid era has me all screwed up.

@Average Joe I started skipping that one before Covid. I liked to shoot 2 divisions and the match got quite popular and I was having a hard time signing up for both. Not sure how the turn out is now.

Turn out is still pretty good but a bunch shoot two divisions so you can sign up for two if you wanted without much issue. Just don't put off registering when it opens.

Jim P used to open the reg in the wee hours and I was always one of the first to reg. I'll watch and see if I can get in one again soon.

Jeff sends out an email before hand so youcan plan on registering when it opens if you wanted to but usually the later in the day spots are open longer. I usually like to shoot around 11-1130am area.

I’m loving the information that I’ve just read. Tha I you all for the responses! I’ve been so busy with the holiday season that I haven’t gotten up here in a while. @Average Joe @Rob01 I may have missed it but how do you register for the DPRC match?

Another fun but very different kind of .22 match: CMP Rimfire Sporter. 60 shots total, three positions (standing @ 25 yards, sitting & prone @ 50 yards), rapid fire & slow fire stages, separate classes for iron sights, scopes, & tactical (AR-style) rifles. Your rifle setup would be a little different from the DPRC match. CZ and 10/22 would be great, but scopes (if you use one) are limited to 4 power or so. Crosse Creek Rifle Club (https://www.crossecreekrifleandpistolclub.com/) in Fayetteville holds them on months with a 5th Saturday with one coming up on the 31st of December. You can also shoot it at the Eastern Games, National Matches, and other CMP clubs & events.

Thanks Josh, already enjoying your channel. Appreciate your adventures with all sorts of rimfire. Very entertaining and always more to learn. Can't wait for the weather to warm up and get back to the range. Merry Christmas!

Thanks Eric, appreciate ya watching!

For those close to Jacksonville/Hubert - local club to me has started PRS style rimfire matches. A few guys that shoot PRS and other precision rifle matches started putting on a Rimfire match once a month.
I shot todays match with a Ruger American rimfire bolt gun and a Nikon rimfire optic - not high dollar gear and I was competitive,
