A coworker was in HS auto shop and the principal asked him for help when his car wouldn't start. It was the spark plug wires, so he pulled out a pocket knife and started trimming them. The principal said something about knives not being allowed at school. My coworker look st him and said, "do you want to walk home?" The principal shut his mouth.

Once in 4th grade I took a pocket knife to school. The teacher found out about it she told me to keep it in my pocket.

I carried a $5 Japanese knock-off of a Buck 110 in high school. Got in trouble for jumping the fence to the football field on a game night. The police took it, told me I had to pay or leave, and handed the knife back. 'Course it was about 1971.

I carried a pocket knife everyday - Teachers often asked to borrow them. We kept rifles / shotguns in our truck windows on racks. Heck I even remember the principle asking to take a look at and admiring a buddy of mine new shotgun in the parking lot of the school. I graduated in 1990 in Louisiana.

Its a post 9/11 and Columbine world etc etc
Its a different time than many of us grew up with.

Dont buy this kid's story one second.
That said, there was a student at my school that forgot a rifle in his car on Monday after he'd been target shooting on Sunday. He told a teacher, they reported, sheriff went out there and no ammo was found. The kid will have (to my knowledge at this time) NO charges pressed, but I think he'll be missing a bit of school because of it.
But it could have been MUCH worse.

Even back in the 80s I used to sell machetes, ninja crap and nunchuks out of a gym back to my fellow students. We got them confiscated if caught but mostly that was it.

Somewhere at my mom's is a school sanctioned picture of our wrestling team on school grounds armed to the teeth. We each had multiple firearms and blades. Coaches words were, "bring all the guns to school you can tomorrow just make sure they are unloaded." 1989 Teachers borrowed my pocket knife all the time too. Don't think a machete would have gotten you arrested. Heck a buddy was caught with his dads pistol in Jr high and just got a few days OSS.

Yeah, things have changed. Although the school now has a shooting team it didn't have back then.

I'm trying to figure out what kind of yard work requires a machete?

Yard work in St. Petersburg, Fl, no less.

I guess we should all be grateful it wasn't a Pop Tart. He'd REALLY be in trouble then.

The kid is probably Hispanic and a machete is their first tool for most any job they undertake. I would have asked where the job was and then confirmed. No confirmation, burned ass......

I use my various brush hooks and machetes for all sorts of stuff outdoors, when you're clearing/trimming back something with thorns the more reach you have the better.

His picture is in the article. I'm going to take a wild guess Daquan Maybell checks the "not Hispanic" box on any gubmint form. ;)

I grew up in Miami, and as a kid was tasked with taking care of our yard. I'm guessing you've never lived in FL. :D

edit - this post is in no way meant to be either for or against the student in question.
