I am considering getting a new main carry gun eventually and relegating my current 3 inch XD9SC to a cross draw backup holster on my left.

I am just not that great of a shooter and I think I could benefit of a more full size gun with a 4 to 5 inch barrel as main carry gun and I'd like the idea of having a backup gun as well.

What would you guys considering good options that are not completely insanely expensive? Ideally it would work with a duty style holster a la Serpa, ALS or similar setups. Caliber 9mm.

I got rid of a Shield and now carry either a CZ PCR (14+1) or a CZ P10S with a Hyve +3 mag extension making it a 15+1.
The PCR has a 3.75 inch barrel and the P10S has a 3.5 inch.

Shoot your current carry gun next to whatever full sized gun you are thinking about before going all in with something else. I went through 8-9 carry guns of all sizes before I settled on one around 4-5 years ago.

Folks here will get tired of hearing it, but I can’t outshoot my current EDC (G43) with anything else inside 10-15 yards. And I’m a decent pistol shooter. So I still carry a 43.

XD-M Elite. Great shooter, optics ready, 20 round mag capacity, interchangeable mags with your XDSC, and same form factor and controls as what you are already used to.

+1 for magazine sharing. That would be the only thing I'd consider, even if it means a different pistol for the cross draw.
Also against the Serpa. I love them, but not for EDC.

Get another gun if you want one - no objections here at all.
BUT...

What benefit do you think that will give? Just curious what you think needs to improve.
It's simple, I just think the extra barrel length and weight makes for easier and more accurate shooting. I know that Jerry Miculek can hit beer cans with a snub nosed revolver at 200 yards, trouble is I am not him and I don't have enough ammo to train to become him.

I remember shooting a 1911 at a gun range and I was just surprised how easy shooting it felt, granted that's on the extreme end of both weight and barrel length.

I did not know the mags are interchangeable, are you sure about that? That would be a plus.

It’s hard to go wrong with a Glock 19 sized 4” service pistol - if you don’t like Glock , look at another similar sized gun. The really nice thing about Glock is mag compatibility with a PCC 9mm carbine ( various AR-9s , Ruger PC …) Magpul offers reliable mags at great prices.

seems like you should just go full size XD? won’t you have the ability to interchange magazines if that is the case?

ALS holster yes. Serpa NO!

As mentioned, getting something with interchangeable mags would be a benefit.

100%sure, I have both guns ;)
For what my .02 will get you...I agree with the above posts 100%.

Generally [Not Always With Every Shooter] as the size of your gun goes Down the difficulty of shooting goes Up.

This is easily proved here On The Range. Personally I tend to agree with what @fieldgrade said. I don't have a pistol I shoot Better inside 10 yards than a G43. I carried 2 for a Long time. The 2 guns I carry now are Difficult to shoot....I manage.....If you decide to take a trip this way we can put Almost anything you would want to try in your Paws. P365XL are nice
I went this route from a G19. I've carried a G19 for the last 15 years, in the past I never liked small 9's, they were uncomfortable to shoot and low capacity. I picked up a P365XL with a Romeo zero, a couple months ago and have close to 1K rounds through it. I found it very comfortable to carry and shoot, I can keep a fist sized group out to 25 yards.

Which XDM model do you have exactly? Somehow I don't see how the XD mags would be long enough to fit? Certainly not the 13 rounders?
most of us are suggesting that the full size magazines Will fit in the subcompact gun. The sub compact magazines will strictly be for use in a subcompact gun.

I will often carry a full size spare magazine even when I’m carrying a subcompact gun

i can shoot fairly accurately with most pistols but ive not found what i consider the perfect carry pistol, due to comfort and weight of gun, i suffer from saggy pants syndrome

I see I was holding the map upside down. o_Oo_Oo_O

XDM-Elite. I carry the extended mags in my XD-SC (15 rd?), but they go right into the Elite.

I still can't believe serpa is still a thing
They sell them everywhere, so it’s often the first thing a new shooter sees when searching for a holster. And seems like a good idea, especially the price, to the uninitiated.
