I tried the ammo consolidation. I did actually let the Mosin go to drop 7.62x54R.
Always had 22LR, 45ACP, 12 gauge, 38sp (wife's revolver). Inherited a couple of 410s, but rarely shoot them - one elderly one can't be shot because the stock needs repair anyway (grandfather's old shotgun).
Got an older Marlin 30-30 - it ain't going nowhere
Lots of M2 30-06, because M1 Garanditis (4 of them) and CMP having M2 surplus to sell (until lately). By the way, that's my least favorite thing to stockpile. When you're pushing 5k rounds of THAT, it's both bulky and heavy... If I had something in 50BMG, I might feel differently...
Lots of 5.56/.223 because, well, lots of ARs. My favorite no-Fudd/no-lib caliber
Then I had to have an AR in 7.62/308. Well, since I had that caliber, then came the M1 in 308
(See what I did there? Added another rifle without adding a caliber...)
Found a great deal on a S&W 586 revolver, which is 357 magnum; well, you GOT to buy that to shoot it through there, even though 38sp is OK
Had 9mm, got out of it, then accumulated some small - and some big - 9mm pistols. So that one came, went, came again.
Had 380, got out of it (only one pistol), then got an LCP custom for a really small pistol when nothing else will fit. So that one came, went, came again.
Inherited my granny's S&W hand ejector in 32 S&W long. So I had to get a small pile of that.
I've never been all that enamored of 40 or 10mm or other non-22LR rimfire calibers. I wouldn't mind an M1 carbine and its ammo, but prices on those are stupid for what they are. And I can't promise that some milsurp, or some revolver chambered in 45LC, or some other hunting rifle caliber like 270 or 243, or some long range thing like 6.5 Creedmore or 6.8 flavor-of-the-month, might not show up. I just can't
My wife, as pro-2A as she is, does sometimes think we resemble one of the NSWC Crane bunkers just a wee bit too much. But the Great Ammo Drought set me to stockpiling, like it did so many others.
