Controlling Pool Algae- Tapping the CFF Knowledge Base

Yeah it's a lot less upkeep with the salt. We have 4 dog that are in and out of it all day so my big problem is just vacuuming up sand off the bottom and a few frog

It’s STILL milky, the chlorine levels haves stayed over 10ppm. Last night I pored 4 gallons of liquid bleach and 2 (10,000 gal ea) bags of shock. Still foggy this morn.
I bottled some water, I’m hoping to swing by a pool store for more extensive testing this afternoon.

What were the test results and recommended course of action?
The chlorine was way high, and the calcium (water hardness) was low.
The next morn there was a tint of green even with the chlorine off the chart. I dropped the chlorine level yesterday with sodium thiosulphate. Then added calcium this morn now that the chlorine levels are correct. The hardness protects metal components in the plumbing and the fiberglass.
The suggested adding a strong flocculent, shut the pump off for 48 hours, then vacuum to waste. Flocculent overnight isn't enough time for fall out.

I added a double dose of floc Saturday night, ran on recirculate for a bit to stir it in. Sun morn it still looked like milk was poured in the pool, you could see ~2’. Sun eve was possibly a bit clearer. This morn, 1.5 days later I can clearly see the bottom. I’ll vac to waste this eve, rain allowing. Ignore the floc directions of overnight, and follow the pool company’s directions of 48 hours. It’s clear where the fallout has congealed and slid down the walls.

Lessons learned?

That’s what I learned and have been saying. You have to flock the heck out of it on the surface and turn that pump off. I did it every year on pool opening after two years of chemical test by pool companies and normal practices. It does require readjusting the chemicals but it’s a lot cheaper than a continue fight. Luckily I had access to our chemicals at the plant I worked at.

Lessons learned?
Yup.
  • Pay attention to CYA, it’s high now & I haven’t found chlorine tablets w/o stabilizer. I’m using liquid for now.
  • Always have a spare o-ring for the auto-chlorinator
  • Floc works ONLY IF it sits for 48+ hours
  • CFF is a wealth of knowledge in the pool world as well.
