That used to happen all the time in Guilford Co 50 years ago. The sheriff finally got threatened with a law suit and they stopped doing it. They said it was dept policy and it was for their safety. I can see temporary confiscation under certain circumstances but they wouldnt give your gat back to you. Had a budd that happened to and he hired a lawyer. The sheriff's dept told him he could come get his gat. His lawyer said BS. Made them send a deputy to his house to give it back to him. Bastards. THey used to harass the $#!t out of us when we were teens. Also know a guy whose dad was NCSHP. When his dad died they found a dresser drawer full of guns he had taken off people or out of their vehicles during traffic stops.

It is DC. They checked the voter registration and found that the perps were registered democrats. They only arrest and prosecute republicans, and journalists that tow the DNC party line.
DC police arrested a journalist for possession of illegal unregistered live ammunition. What did he have in his car? A single spent shotgun shell. DC rules (and MA and NY) treat any single spent case the same as having a 1000 rounds of live ammo that hasn't been registered with the gestapo.

How do they know that the guns were illegal?

Our protectors care about us so much, why are they hassling them?
DC now apparently honors permits from almost anywhere, but the hucks who live in that horrible town don't bother, and The Glorious Socialist Peoples Republic of Marylandistan is almost impossible to get a permit.
So the cop would basically say, "hmmm. I guess I found this gun huh? Or if it is yours you are under arrest fro CPWL (Carrying Pistol Without a License)..
Shady AF...
I am absolutely not surprised...
I am however pleasantly surprised to see Contee made chief. He was a good dude, and my commander in the 6th District, much better than Lanier.

rando dbag says: "that’s just not the way that we conduct business in the Metropolitan Police Department."

Um, apparently it is how you conduct 'business' since it's what they're actually doing.

So they filed away the guns after lying on the reports (per that thing saying cam footage doesn't match the report), but I'm just assuming they kept the cash, drugs and anything else they felt like taking during their 'stop and rob' adventures?

shady, but one can't argue with a plea bargain for a few few hundred dollars.

Do you have a link for the DC reciprocity? I’m still seeing that only DC permits allowed to carry. No reciprocity.

So, what are they doing with the confiscated firearms? Certainly can't be checking them as evidence, since they acted as judge & jury -
Which means they've stolen firearms, even if taken from a career criminal ( not like that person would file a complaint, exactly the reason those guys did these things).
I would be put under the jail.

Another case of "laws for thee, not for me".

More than shady AF, it's criminal.

Am not offended by the effort to remove guns from prohibited persons as defined by their jurisdiction. The police know that the prosecution of the charge will be ineffective at deterring future crime. As if they want to surrender the gun, that’s fine. There should however be a property record for the transaction.

Best advice?
Attend BLET, or another state’s academy, or make nice nice with a sheriff or CLEO in another state.
Become a reserve officer and get sworn creds.
Now you are covered under LEOSA and can basically carry and employ a weapon almost anywhere, including that steaming garbage pile nyc.
I have been considering this. not sure the best route. though some smaller depts are known for letting you basically buy your certs for a donation to the station.

This was SOP in the Rampart Division of L.A. County....They stopped everybody they suspected of crimes and took their money, dope and guns.

Pretty soon....the Rampart division was the "cleanest" in Los Angeles County......the offenders left for easier operations.

Rampart was and is part of LAPD, not to be confused with the LA County Sheriff. Located within Rampart Division is the planet’s best chili dog, chili burger stand. 🤓

The only part that's surprising is that the guns were put into evidence. It has been common practice for generations for cops to take guns away from anyone they see fit. I remember a buddy of mine when we were kids who's father was a cop had a big box in their basement full of cheap guns he'd taken. The good ones had all been sold.

DC honors other permits? Since when? That would be huge.

A Chicago police captain told me to carry a really nice handgun, something desirable. Then if I got stopped the officer would take the handgun and send me on my way. He'd keep it of course. If it was something cheap like a Raven I'd be arrested for being a cheap SOB. This was in the mid 80s
