I have been trying to get a copy of my DD214. I was in my filing cabinet, very long story short my MIL somehow lost it along with all my page 7's good and bad. I have gone to the va website, ebenefits, and 1 other can't remember at this point. All say they can't confirm my identity. Anyone know how to get a copy of it without going to the VA here in Asheville. Trying to get my ccw permit. Have had everything done for 2 years except the sheriff office paperwork which says I have to have a copy of it.

Here’s the VAs take on it.
I think you have to go through the records office not the VA necessarily. Once you do manage to get it, go register a copy of it at your county records. Then you can get an official copy whenever you want.

Milconnect is one of the sites that can't confirm me

It says that I have to go to a va and show proof of my identity to complete my registration because it could not be E verified

Have you confirmed your sheriff will accept a 2 year old certificate? Many will not.

I have not, maybe I should go there today. If the license is good for 5 years, I wouldn't see why not. I don't have to take another class to renew after 5 years sooo. But worth looking into

Well that sucks, like I said I am going there today to verify if they will

Did you not have it recorded at the vital records dept in the county where you lived when you were discharged.

Thats been recommended practice since the 1940s

Don't mention being a veteran and you won't need to provide a DD214.

True story.

Agreed, for this. Other stuff, that 214/256/257 is a very big deal.

They make getting it so damn onerous I know--just know--they do it on purpose to keep you for filing for bennies. I think they are hoping you just give up.

I talked with the Sheriff ( the lady that does the paperwork side of it) and she told me they will accept my certificate up to 5 years old. I will only need to retake the class if my permit expires. If I keep it up to date no worries. She also said don't worry about the dd-214. So my appointment is a week from Friday. I guess we will see how long it takes after that.

It was over a decade ago.
At the VA Hospital in Baltimore, I couldn’t find my DD214. They sent me to another VA Office about 4 blocks away. That office pulled up a copy. I took the copy back to the main office. The main office stamped it, and I took the stamped copy back to the second office.
The second office now had a certified copy that I could pull up at any time.
Again, it was government bureaucracy at its finest, and @Diablos can probably explain it far better, but I am now able to get a certified copy from my VA office

Asking for dd-214 for ccw seems rather annoying if not severe. I have had carry permits from two counties in NC as well as 2 other states over 17 years and that was never been requested. I am relieved to hear the Sheriff’s dept dropped this requirement for you.

*Ironically, I would dig through all my files without hesitation to find my DD-214 to bag an online veteran’s discount.

sometimes the stupidity within the government is just...deep breath...yeah

best thing to do for yourself is send a copy of your dd214 into the intake center, that way vha and vba can access it. not sure if nca has access to that database, but it wouldnt surprise me.

I had a guy I kinda adopted at a grandpa. He filed his with the county where he lived in Colorado when he separated.

When he passed it was on me, or let the county do whatever they do with unclaimed bodies, to send him out with dignity. He had told me about what he did, 3 phone calls and I had a copy in my hands. I got him and his wife's ashes laid in a veteran cemetery.

I don't know if they still record them or not. But it's another guarantee you can get to it if needed.

I just got an email from the archive department with several downloads. 1 of them was my dd214. 😁😁. Thanks everyone
