I had to look around on Google. I knew there was a club that did it here in NC, but wasn't familiar with which one. The Fast Draw website map shows a couple of other clubs in NC, but they aren't affiliated yet.

There are different types of cowboy type shooting competitions, each governed by different organizations.

(I invite correction from readers).

Cowboy Fast Draw involves shooting one single action revolver loaded with a cartridge that uses a shotshell primer to propel a wax bullet at a steel target. I believe all revolvers are .45 Colt chambering. A succession of single shots from leather. Can be set up indoors or outdoors. The sanctioning organization is the Cowboy Fast Draw Association.

Mounted cowboy shooting requires horsemanship and shooting. Participants use .45 Colt black powder blanks to break balloons from horseback. Mostly requires a pair of revolvers but some matches incorporate a rifle. Main organization is the Cowboy Mounted Shooting Association.

Cowboy Action Shooting is the trademarked name for multigun matches sanctioned by the Single Action Shooting Society. Shooters use two single action revolvers, a pistol caliber rifle, and a shotgun. Real ammunition (with lead bullets) on steel targets. Firearms are generally of the type used pre-1900.

There is another group that uses Old West style revolvers on steel targets called the National Congress of Old West Shootists (NCOWS) that puts more emphasis on the use of period correct gear.
