Cruise: I was wrong.

I loved our Alaska cruise. I loathe beaches, but my wife and friends insisted on a Caribbean cruise. Not only did I hate every minute of it, but junior threw up on the shuttle bus back to the car, and a few hours later I was hit with the worst case of norovirus I ever had. No more for me, thanks.

It was beautiful. Absolutely beautiful up there. Did a Norwegian cruise that trip

Took an excursion for a day and went though the Yukon Territory and got a stamp in the passport for it. The views were amazing

Whale watching around Ketchikan, saw some Orcas. More whale watching around Juneau and while everyone was looking left, I was looking right and got a double breach

Going to Banff, Jasper and a few other parks in Canada next year

St. John next to St. Thomas is actually very nice and the beaches on the North side are the most beautiful I have seen. Like a postcard.
If I go back I’ll be bypassing St. Thomas.

Don’t be giving away the secret NKD. Seriously though St John is absolutely beautiful. Pre kids my wife and I went 3 times in about a year a half. The majority of the small island is national park so it can’t be built on. If you are looking for a laid back beautiful vacation spot this is it. We’ve been to all the big places and keep going back to St John.

It isn’t cheap but well worth the price. If anyone has any questions happy to answer what I can.

I went on my first cruise in February. My son asked to go on one for his Christmas present from us so we made it happen. We went on Carnival and had a great time. In my experience if you wanted to party you could, but there was also a ton of stuff that you could do as a family. He asked for another cruise for Christmas this year so we are going on another in March with Carnival again.

That area where the kid landed is on the "Central Park" section. Quiet cafe where I got coffee and breakfast each morning.

Nothing eases you into the early morning quite like a body plummeting out of the sky.

Wonder if the kid tried sitting on the railing and fell backwards. See that a lot at theme parks, parents have no control over the kids.

I would like to take my wife on an Alaskan cruise next year for our 25th anniversary (but not in December, when our actual anniversary is). These are great pics.

We took Princess and it was great. We left huge tips for our frequent bartender and wait staff (two younger crew members) on the last day because of the service. Ours was the "inner passage" - Juneau, Ketchikan, Skagway, Glacier Bay, etc. with a short stop in Canada. The crowd tends to be much older and more mature than compared to other cruises due to price and duration (10 days for us), so you more or less have the boat to yourself after 10pm or so. We missed salmon season but had family in Ketchikan at the time, so still had a good time touring the area, spotting bears, eagles, etc.

We've been on Carnival, Holland America, and Princess with the majority on Princess. We have a 16 day trans Atlantic cruise coming up in March, Ft. Lauderdale, Azores, Morocco, Portugal, Spain, Southampton. We're not drinkers or partiers and appreciate the older crowd on Princess. They have smaller ships but each new one in the fleet gets larger. Tbe upcoming cruise will be #12 for us. Our next cruise after this one will probably be on Holland America, smaller ships.

I have sailed on two lines, US Navy and Holland America. We loved Holland America with the smaller boats, older clientele, the more nautical themes decor and boats. I know there are cheaper lines, but our next one will be back with HA.

When we did ours for our honeymoon in 1999, at our table was an old man, probably 70, and his wife, a strikingly gorgeous Asian gal of about 20. They were doing an around-the-world cruise of sorts They did our cruise, then from Miami to Europe on a different line, then from Europe around Africa, etc. In all I think they were spending about 6 months away from home, LA, which is where they were to end. At our last dinner, this man bought several bottles of the boat's most expensive wine and champagne for the table to share.

I did the same route but on Norweigan. Kayaked in Ketchikan with orcas coming up and curious harbor seals, watched glaciers calve in the Bay and was unable to get my cameras to pick up and replicate the stunning blue coming from the deep ice pockets…watched the sun set over the snow covered peaks in Skagway. Breathtaking views in the Yukon. I’d love to go back considering the portion of AK I saw was basically the southern most parts and didn’t even get into the main territory of the state

I like cruises such as the Alaska one that let you get out and see some amazing places and it takes some of the stress out of planning the trips.

Although not on cruises, in the last five years we’ve been to the Tetons, Yellowstone, Glacier, Badlands, Zion, Arches, Capitol Reef, Bryce Canyon, Moab, Olympic, Cascades, Rainier and many other state parks in those areas, and these are just the places on the other side of the Mississippi for the purpose of like comparison. Banff will probably rival or top any of them as far as majestic views/vistas. I love traveling and seeing these huge places….every time I come back home I wonder why I don’t just pack up and move west. But it’s A LOT of planning work

I need to make a big photo thread here. My 9yo (who has I think 20 national parks crossed off his checklist) was at work today telling a coworker about the recent cruise and she said “the Bahamas…that’s pretty far…probably the furthest you’ve ever traveled huh?” and he goes “No, I’ve been to Paris” 🤣

@Supermatch , @11B CIB , because of your posts, my wife and I are thinking about a 7-day Alaskan cruise next summer for our 25th anniversary. I guess we'll need passports since embark is in Canada, but plenty of time to get that squared away.

You'll be surprised how quickly 7 days goes by. Our 10 day deal went by in a blink (Seattle departure/arrival). Having to spend time in Seattle was the only downside. I'd rather have left from Canada!

Maybe...my wife and (minor) boys were able to travel to Bahamas on just Birth Certificates.

FWIW, getting a passport is easier than getting a Real ID.

Man, I have not even thought about the REAL ID. I will check out and find the path of least resistance. If we Alaska it will be Aug, if we do Caribbean (still a possibility though we are leaning Alaska) likely fall.

My wife and I took a Bahamas cruise for our 20th anniversary back in 2016. I wasn't too crazy about the idea when we talked about it months earlier, what with having spent 20 years in the Navy and all.

But it turned out to be quite fun! It's nice to go to sea and not be involved with operating, watchstanding, maintenance, cleaning, drills, etc. Plenty of activities for us to enjoy during the cruising time at sea, I got to wander a port call at Nassau just like all the foreign ports during my time in the Navy, only with my wife by my side enjoying it with me, and we got to do some activities together that we would never have done otherwise (like the parasailing thing).

I'd like to do it again, only this time an Alaskan cruise which my wife has wanted to do for a long time.

Start early on the passport thing. They get backed up. And they take awhile on a good day.

Feel free to PM and I can get you my contact info if you want more details, pictures etc

I’d love to go back to Alaska

I would do a river cruise. Not going out to sea. I can't swim to shore from there. Glad y'all had a good time.
