Just introduced myself as I'm new to the forum. In a similar vein, I am by no means an expert in any capacity.

I'm seriously considering taking the plunge on a 16" Daniel Defense. But the only thing that is giving me pause is the phosphate...

Just wondering if anyone smarter than me can explain why they elect to use Phosphate instead of Nitride for their barrels? I've always read that Nitride is universally preferred. Phosphate barrels seem to be higher maintenance, as well? With my limited understanding, can't figure out why they would use it instead, but always looking to learn.

Thanks

You have to use phosphate when you chrome-line a barrel. Phosphate goes on the outside, chrome on the inside. Nitride barrels are nitride all over. Can't use chrome on the inside with nitride on the outside...for whatever reason.

As far as I know all DD barrels are chrome-lined. Apparently they think the chrome-lining on the inside is worth not having as good an outside treatment. I would not worry about it, they seem to know what they are doing.

yes, the definitely seem to know what they're doing. Thanks for the input.

If you're worried about corrosion, you could always cerakote it before installation. I remember our local and now displaced cerakote guy saying that the phosphate makes a great base for cerakote.

I’ve had a DDM4 V7 for about 8yrs and never had any corrosion issues. The barrel is also under a 15in handguard so I don’t ever wipe it down or oil it. Again, never been an issue.
