Im going, I know I know, I dont need the lecture.
BUT, what IS legal there?
Ive got a week (well, leaving Saturday morning).
Spending two or three nights up (I really dont know, GF booked the room this evening, she wants to take me up for my bday), I know we'll be going into @Chdamn's Wife old turf of Silver Springs for a quick look at my great grandparent's old home, but other than that it's just the basics of Smithsonain, other museums, a ballgame probably, etc.

i know guns are out. It sucks. I got two in the car now, always keep one in there, but I understand it's a big no-no up that way.
Any advice? (other, of course, than "Dont go")

Stay away from SE DC. Check out the the old ebbitt grill. Oldest restaurant in dc. Worth the wait to get a table.

The mad hatter used to be a great bar. Right next to it was an all nude strip club that had really excellent dancers.

You’re better off parking in MD and using the metro to get around. Parking is impossible in DC.

I’ll see what else I can think of.

DC is one of my favorite vacation spots, lots to do and a great place to walk around all day. I am not sure about carrying knives there, lots of places to go through a metal detector. I have always carried one of those tactical pens and never had an issue.

Oh. If you’re clean cut and dress off the rack like a detective they will assume you are and leave you alone.

PM Ing you

Best crab cakes use to be had about half way to MD at a place called gunnings or their bar Timbuktus but I think they’re closed now.

Check out the ceramic folding knives from Amazon in the "what blade are you carrying today" thread. A couple quick mods and they'd be invisible to a metal detector.

If you are willing to go a little bit north of Silver Spring to Columbia, MD there is a restaurant called The Corner Stable that has really amazing crab cakes and ribs. @Chdamn was right, Gunnings was the best but they are closed now, but The Corner Stable does not disappoint.

If you want to get lunch in Silver Spring, there is a little restaurant called Parkway Deli. Get some matzo ball soup or some blintzes. The best!

Georgetown at night can be fun. DC zoo is pretty cool. If you want want to get away from the hustle and bustle for a bit check out the Great Falls/Caderock area. Billy Goat trails to hike and fishing.

You know Im not clean cut.
lol

Ok, I got information on hotel, it's IN DC, like IN it. It'll be a ten minute walk to Lincoln Monument etc

Hive Hotel, has parking. We will walk to a lot of the tourist sites.

Ive been to DC many many many times. My family is from there, I truly cant tell you how many times Ive been before. But times are weird.
We will be at touristy areas mostly, historical stuff. Might hit up a record shop or two, but it'll be during the day and will likely drive to that (Ive been before, knowing where they are, it's not a walkable area from where we'll be.

There's also this.
What are folks doing for a sheath for these?

That's a larger thread, do you know, and I apologize for asking, what I should be looking for exactly?

Only thing metal on those is the keyring and the Chicago screw holding it all together. Get a nylon chicago/binding screw of the proper size and get rid of the key ring thingy.

On the cold steel thing. I made a cardboard and tape thingy when I carried mine.

I need to see if I can actually mold a kydex sheath for one without melting it.

And I have made a kydex sheath for one without melting it. Durable too. I tested one to destruction and it took seven or eight full power stabs into a pine tree before I snapped a half inch off the tip. So then I reprofiled the tip and it still works.

Just hand washed a North Face jester backpack that I use for junkyarding.
It's older, not super large, not very heavy. And it just blends in. Im taking it, in case we ever have a bigger day with lots of exploring and want to toss some drinks in or something. It's in the sink drying, got a box fan on it.

Will have a plastic pokey thing that I had printed a while back. But, as stated, we're not going to be doing much exploring at night, and any of it will be at higher traffic areas/monuments.

Weather looks good for the trip, first day will be hot, after that mid 80s.
Ball game one night
Who knows what else, I know she's got a nice(r) restaurant in mind for my birthday.

Ill update as we go (I plan to take computer)

Someone forgot their fullsized G in the car.
So two things in the safe in the room, with a code that I/the user put in.

We're in Foggy Bottom, uppity it seems, gentrified, but there are still tents here and there, which I dont like. Heading back to car for a LM before we go to dinner for bday.
Tonight will be one of few times we're walking at night, but it's only ten minute walk from hotel

@Chdamn def knows the best spots to get crabs.
Reminds me of the joke about tulips on your organ versus a case of crabs.

Ok, speaking of DC, a roll of quarters in a sock or handkerchief might be an option. That was my dad’s go to in the navy. Then again, pay phones are a thing of the past, so you can’t use thst excuse.

Not sure how many follow sports, Im not a big sports person, personally.
But saw last night there was a shooting outside the baseball stadium...we had planned to go last night, but decided to push till Monday. May not go.
Four people shot outside the park, game suspended and park cleared out.

Saw Lincoln, Vietnam, and Einstein last night after leaving Dukes for dinner. A great burger!

Ok, Im home, let's do this.

Saturday - drove up, that night she took me to a local place called Dukes known for their burger - I had told her I didnt want fancy, just a good burger will be all she needs to do for me. She delivered.
Afterwards we headed off towards Lincoln Monument. Of course, it's more than that. Einstein statue is across the street and then there is Vietnam and Korea...though Korea is closed right now, or at least that's how it seemed from 50' away.

Sunday
Im checking the Natural History Museum's site like a hawk, awaiting the release of tickets for that day, as they were already reserved. Then they released them, 11:30 was our entry time.

We started with breakfast, again, she knows I love breakfast, so we went to a place called Founding Farmers or something. Look, it was good, but give me Cagney's and Im a happy guy. It was downtown DC, so it was a bit expensive. When I say a bit, I mean A LOT.
Side of bacon - 8 bucks. Now, I got their 'protein plate,' which was 3 eggs and 2 meat sides and a side of fruit. Each SIDE of bacon was 2 pieces...
But it was good.

Then, on the way to Natural History we stopped at the WW1/Pershings memorial near the White House. Then the White House.

Afterwards we went to the botanical gardens, only the outside is open, though.
Then headed to a little punk rock record shop, which I found nothing in the used section.

Then back to the hotel, clean off a little and we were off to Alexandria to meet up with a friend of hers. She had made tacos for us, it was nice to meet a close friend of hers that I'd heard a lot about, and, of course, her getting to spend time with her friend is great.

Monday.
Great, we got tickets to the American history museum!
Hit up a little c-store that had a deli in it near our hotel. HOLY CRAP, there was a solid half pound of bacon on each bagel, and it was so good (bacon egg and cheese...in fact, went back today!)

History museum, then over to the Spy Museum, which was good. Here is THE pick axe that killed Trotsky

Then we uber over to National's Park for a ball game. Im not a huge baseball fan, but live it's fun.
And the Nats crushed the Marlins, 18 runs by the 8th inning (Florida ended up scoring after we, and most, left)

Then we hopped on a Lime moped to get back the 3 miles or so. Not the first ride on these this weekend, but the most fun.

And Im PRETTY sure that we saw Marine 1 overhead, there were two helos low and close to each other, and we were near the WH (by the Kennedy Center at the time)

TODAY
We come home.
Again, deli for a bagel, then off to Alexandria, walk by the waterfront, see some little shops. Then on the way home.
PItstop in Richmond

Hit up a record shop, got a Jeff Healy Band lp, as well as one by Tim Barry, who is local to RVA, and used to be in punk band AVAIL
