Derek’s Trail Riding and Arizona Adventure Thread

I love nighttime out here. Was 105° today but sitting outside right now on the back patio and 80 feels almost chilly. Having some beers and watching YouTube enjoying the evening. It’s completely quiet except for the occasional burst of gunfire from people night shooting and the 1000cc machines that go by from people out cruising the desert enjoying the night too. Might even sleep in the hammock for a few hrs tonight. Cheers.

Awesome birds. We have a couple that live in the tree in our yard. It’s very cool to sit on the patio and see them working to build the nest together and watching them run down prey. They’re amazing hunters. They also kill snakes and I suspect that’s why I haven’t had any rattlesnakes in my yard.
My first experience with road runners was at Fort Polk in 1971. I couldn't believe a bird could run so fast. They were fun to watch.

I didn’t realize they got that far east.

Mrs. Google says, "The Greater Roadrunner is a common species in the desert and brush country of the Southwest, but its full range reaches from California to western Louisiana."

Wife was upset with Randy (what we named the roadrunner) she texted me that he made a meal out of a baby quail. Lol. Also got a pic of him with a big grasshopper70932944591__B2A4A266-42D2-4716-8444-6201B4E718E3.jpegIMG_6631.jpeg

Found the biggest scorpion I have ever seen in an old mine shaft the other night.

Pretty cool dirt devil

I'll never find a scorpion in an old mine shaft at night...or day. 'Cause I ain't going in an old mine shaft. No telling what kind of critters are in there.

Just take a black light out at night. You'll find them!

Wife and I came up to Calgary for a few days. Stayed at a casino for the first two days and now we’re at s hotel downtown. Trip has been awesome so far and has been a huge relief to get out of the heat for s few days. Even saw rain yesterday!

Did some downhill cart racing at the Olympic park. And sat in the Cool Runnings bobsled

Played some slots with this Canadian Monopoly money. Was a good time, left with more than we started with so that’s always a positive.

The main reason we planned This trip. Concert was great and they were awesome Live. My favorite band and this is the 4th time we’ve seen them.

The other reason we came. Banff National Park has been on my wife’s bucket list forever so there was no way we couldn’t see it being this close. Was only a 2hr drive from Calgary. What an absolutely breathtaking place. I don’t think I’ve ever seen anywhere more beautiful in my life.

Got a laugh out of this…”heat warning” 😂😂

Didn’t think I would see this out here in the desert but looks like a good storm is headed up to wash some filth off Southern CA and we are going to get a bunch of rain from the outskirts. I don’t think it will be too bad for us, just a bunch of rain and maybe some flooding. Only calling for 2in but that is a TON of rain to get at one time here and will likely turn all the dry washes into rivers. Looking forward to getting out in the rain and riding around in the “cooler” weather.

Excited for the temps over the next couple days and this is also the first time ever a tropical storm warning has been issued for Souther Ca so that’s kinda cool.

Had to take a trip out to Pendleton for some work BS tomorrow morning so I just came up today and grabbed a hotel. The weather is magnificent! It was a 43° difference from when I left yuma to pulling into my hotel I’m Oceanside. Enjoyed a few.l fresh brews at Stone brewing and walked around on the pier for a bit.

Well damnit….my day didn’t end so well. Was cruising along down the wash to meet a buddy and hit a BIG hole. Sunk it and it shut off; hopefully the motor isn’t hydro locked. Buddy came out and pulled me him in his Ram.

Think I got lucky. Pulled the air filter, disconnected the battery and then pulled the spark plugs and turned it over. Shot water out like a fire hydrant for the first couple turns. Got it all blown out, reinstalled plugs and it fired up instantly so I’m pretty sure I have good compression still and it should be GTG.

I have on order new spark plugs, oil, air filter and diff/tranny fluid. Gonna get it all cleaned up and should be good as new soon.

Shot this sidewinder last night while my buddy and I were out in the desert doing some night shooting. Normally when we come across them out here I let them be, but this dude slithered right up to as and was inches away from my buddy’s foot when we discovered him.

Was in Phoenix yesterday and we used a Waymo to get to a different brewery. It’s a ride share like Uber but completely autonomous. Was a little nerve wracking at first but it drove very well. They only operate in Phoenix and San Francisco right now but expanding to more cities soon

Aw hell no. I'll walk.

Some pics from a recent trip some buddies and I did to Ajo, AZ. Lot of snakes were out and this was the first time seeing a Gila Monster out in the wild, very cool looking lizard.

This one looks like a Mohave Green.Screenshot_20240403-171621.png

So I have a question.

Are you able to go shooting wherever you want in the middle of the desert, or are there “ranges” where you have to do all your shooting at?

For the most part as long as I’m on BLM land, and that’s where I do 90% of my desert activities anyway , then yes. Find a spot that’s safe to shoot at and go nuts. There are also some dedicated ranges you can use too, and sometimes I go to one of those because they have real benches that are covered and steel out to 600yds. The one I go to is all free and no RSO regulating it either.
