I know there are a lot of dorks on here. This game, aside from buying cheap disks, if usually free. Don't have to carry golf clubs or wear those stupid golf clothes. Nice walk. Kinda fun. Ever tried it?

So, disk golf: discuss.

How much is a good set of disk?

I think you basically need a Driver, a mid range, and a putter. They seem to cost 8-15$ each for the most part. Can probably get packages cheaper online, and can probably spend more too. PlayItAgain sports seems to be a good resource for them. They have both new and used.

Edit: can easily get away with just long range and putter to begin.

I used to play. I also played ultimate for N.C. State. When I play disc golf, I like to play with an ultimate disc. Even almost got a hole in one at Kaplan.

Dang. PRO.

Disc golf is awesome! You can get a starter kit for probably $30 that comes with a driver, mid, and putter. I've been playing for years and often just take 3 or so with me to keep it light.

It's one of those easy to learn but hard to master games. It is just as fun playing with someone good as it is playing with a newb.

If nothing else, youre out in the woods and that's enough reason for me.

@NKD I have some disc you can use to try it out. I used to play years ago. I really enjoy playing, started having knee issues and had to quit. I’ll shoot you a text and arrange a meet up.

I have several discs and used to play on sunday afternoons. Really enjoyable and all the courses I played were free. I suck at the game but it is good exercise.

Jerry took me a couple weeks ago and I already have like 9 disks, lol. Took the ole lady and she enjoyed it so had to buy extras. So have played twice now and was going to go today but weather crapped out.

But I'll take anything I can get to add to collection! Sorry knee cut the career short. Sucks.

That's about how I look at it. Gets me off my fat rear: good.

My buddy was a semi-pro disc golfer, traveled all over the country playing for a year before he had to get a job and be an adult. You always imagine a bunch of hippies listening to Phish but he was ultra competitive Slayer blasting in his headphones just angry as hell throwing a frisbee.

Used to play a lot, competed some. I have played all over the state and some out of state. I still have my bag of discs, they are now considered "retro" and it's been two years since I have thrown. I need to get my fat butt back out there, it's pretty good exercise. Time is the problem these days.

Yes, you run into some hippies for sure. Peculiar smells in the woods. Obviously most are laid back folks.

Then you have the parents walking their kids around a disc golf course oblivious of the damage one of those discs can inflict, they just think Wham o Frisbee, these are NOT Frisbee. My wife is permanently disabled from catching a disc across the forearm. Happened 25 years ago, no use of that arm.

Ha, I have a couple hole in one's at Kaplin. Short course. That wasn't a brag, just a memory that I forgot about. Ultimate disc is cheating, just saying :) (Hole #1 and one on the back, down the hill can't remember the number and I think they have changed the course a little since)

Yeah, same hole. And how is a ultimate disc cheating? Most of my friends think it's a handicap. (not upset, mildly amused and curious)

When looking at disks to buy, I was surprised to find a market for "vintage" disks and whatnot. Some of the prices shocked me!

I'm sure I have some unmolested up in the attic, probably a large box of them. The one's I play are beat up. Sucks when you loose one, they don't make them anymore.

You could always go swimming in the pond at cedar hills....

Try night golf next. Don't get arrested.

Ha, oh hell no. I'm not getting in that mud hole. I had a Shepherd back in the day that would go get mine if I hit the water. What is that? Hole #9 I think.

I honest to god thought me and a few friends invented the game when we were kids. We used to point at a tree and say what par was and throw. Just did it with whatever cheap Frisbees we had on hand.

Of course we also use to play Tron with them. Running around the yard throwing them as hard as we could at each other.

Learned to play Ultimate when I went to a camp out in Colorado. Actually really liked playing that but it wasn't even a thing back in SC at the time.

My brother used to do custom inked discs. People take vintage styles and bleach them and remove the stamps then do custom designs. Some pretty out there stuff.

I played a lot when I was a teenager and young man. Night golf at Cedar Hills or the Country Course in the early 90's was epic fun. I remember my first Ace, a blind dogleg hole called the Judge on the Country Course during a day-night-day tournament... Good times...

Just a shout out to the memory of Slayernut

Wow, forgot all about the country course. Blast from the past. Hell, we have probably met. I was trying to remember some names from back then. The only one that comes to mind are the Markov brothers. Oh, and Joe Who. Who could forget him.

@NKD , CFF’s largest dork here. I have been playing disc golf for about 10 years. Neighbors got me into it. Harris Lake has a course with several lake and pond holes that add some fun risk. Nothing like watching your favorite $15 disc sail into the lake.

I have played at somewhere over 200 courses nationally. Many hard core disc golfers will argue that NC and particularly Charlotte is the mecca of disc golf. Tons of free courses in NC. Lots of private courses too. I have a friend with a 100 acre tree farm in Linville that is an insanely awesome course. Ashe County Park up by our mountain place is great. Asheville has a great course. Heck, the course on UNC campus is pretty darn good. Cedarock Park in Burlington has 2 courses. One is long and mostly open and one is heavily wooded. They used to host the US Championships every year at Winthrop. Not sure if they still do as I don’t play as much as I used to. Fun to watch what really good players can do. I helped build the course at Rockridge Park in Pittsboro. That’s pretty good if you are looking for someplace close. And the City Tap is a decent 19th hole on the way home.

Can this be played while naked??

I played a course up near Blacksburg VA years ago. Wound my way up the mountains and found where to park. Hiked around the course doing my thing. Turn a path and behind a basket saw a nekid chick posing on the edge of a hillside while some guy photographed her. Accidentally through a disc in the generally vicinity so I could get a closer look. It was good. Picked up my disc and went on my way. But I’ve seen way more nekid people fishing than playing disc golf.

Cool, but doubt if you are a bigger dork than bigfelipe.

I have only played the Middle Creek one. Down by Holly Springs. Seemed pretty nice. Scouted Kentwood today on my way home. It seems pretty beginner so I'll prob try that one next.
Then I'll probably try Harris Lake. Judging by reviews, you are right, lost disks a o'plenty!

Lets go play! You can show me how it's done. I've been watching vids and I am anxious to try a back hand drive. At this point I've really only tried forehand shots.

I have a bad arm right now, but don’t mind walking, having a cold beer and seeing if I could actually throw. Maybe sometime in the next week or two. Headed to the mountains tomorrow to break quarantine around a fire pit with friends and bourbon.

Harris will hurt you if you don’t have good control of your shots. I have at least 100 discs. Several specifically for risky water shots that if lost no harm done. I can take you to Harris and warn you on the ugly holes. I’ve probably played there a few hundred times.
