I bought a car hauler in Georgia with a bonded title - did not think that would be a big deal until I tried to register it. DMV lady says I gotta get the thing inspected between 8AM & 10 AM Monday - Thursday.

Anything I should do in advance to make the process easier? I have Bill of Sale, seller's Georgia Title Bond and a notarized MVR-92H. The trailer seems solid, lights all work, safety chains intact.

Am I about to get clubbed like a baby seal or should be simple? Any DMV office I should avoid? They are telling me to go to Coliseum Blvd in Greensboro.

I have a title from 2 owners prior. Seller to me did not sign that one. Should I "forget" that document?

Yep planning to arrive about 7:30 - this thing won't fit in a regular space so I'll have to be the jerk taking up several off to the side. Will make sure I position myself so I can get out too. Been there / done that.

Don't care if I get a bonded title. Just want the thing registered so I can use it!

Bonded title has its benefits and pains…. Short version of my story.

Brought a bronco frame back from AL on a BOS. AL is a known no-issue title for old cars/trucks. I had to submit forms via email (BOS, 2 NC DMV forms).

2wks later - on-site visual inspection and theft check in a limited-access national database; pics and sign in blood. Left with am inspection report.

Next step was to get the bond from my insurance company and went to DMV with all paperwork (BOS, DMV form, inspection report, bond) and paid my $180 DMV title fees.

4months later and after 1 STUPID correction, I’m still waiting for my title.

I guess it could be worse, but I started this process in May 2023.

Stay optimistic. Take all your paperwork. Be honest. Pay the fees and hope for best!

Adding bonded title = title

There’s no difference. The bond is just insurance that it wasn’t stolen and someone doesn’t claim it as stolen since you’ve bought it.

I will never — not ever — buy another vehicle for road use in NC without complete title paperwork. Depends somewhat on the inspector you get, but they have no choice but to stick to the rules they are given, and they have no sense of humor. If you have anything missing they will tell you what to do. Just do it. You will eventually be able to register your hauler, if you live long enough.

Where should breakaway cable attach to on tow vehicle? Can it be same loop used for safety chain?

Yes, I have mine attached to the safety chain.
Make sure there is plenty of length for turning.

See below, I've been doing it wrong.

Really, that is legit? Just attach the wire to a link on the chain? That might be the easiest part of this mess.
No it must be connected to a separate attachment point.
On a 5th wheel or gooseneck it cannot be attached to the hitch itself

I should buy a lottery ticket

Inspection was easy. They did not bother checking lights, brakes, emergency cables or anything else.

Got a title bond online in about 4 minutes from colonialsurety.com that satisfied DMV lady who gave me a permanent plate.

I wouldn't buy a ticket, you used up all your luck on that trailer

Nah

What you experienced is typical from what I’ve seen and been through. It’s not too different than people going somewhere or any other kind of service. If you had a good experience, you won’t tell anyone. If you had a bad experience, you tell everyone you can and then some. That’s why the horror stories are inflated and amplified.

I’ve been through this process twice now. Once for the bonded title: second time for an out of state Jeep.

I’m glad you had a simple experience. Both times it’s been a chore. I’m at 6 months now for the bonded title…. Send me some luck please….

Well to be honest I was fighting with my insurance - Progressive - for a week to get the bonded title. Even tried other insurance carriers such as State Farm & Farmers. For kicks I tried a Google search for "title bond" colonialsurety.com was top suggestion.

Cost, minimum of $100, or 10% of DMV's assessed value which is way below actual value of the trailer.

So if your having trouble with a title bond give colonialsurety.com a try. I have no interest in the company.

IDK about Maine but Vermont shut theirs down, they were the go to for no title/out of state titling.
I believe the thread was about Vermont and not Maine
They all Yankees anyway
